“The UK prostate cancer mortality rate is twice as high as in countries like the US or Spain because our levels of testing are much lower than other countries".
“The well-known limitations of the old PSA-based screening studies of overdiagnosis and linked overtreatment are increasingly mitigated by the use of MRI,”
OMG - and in Canada the scandal is still that PSA testing itself is not funded as part of standard of care for regular annual checkups!
But MRI you say? What's that? (0K I had a few ... ) But of course in my case and along with so many men around the world, it was all too late and here I am enjoying triplet therapy. And it's working really well! I'm grateful!
Could also lead to diagnosis of men with low grade pc and overtreatment.10 yrs before it would become routine if the NHS had the resources which is doubtful
Thanks! Assuming additional studies confirm this one, now we have 2 reasons to do MRI pre-biopsy. For men who are referred for biopsy after a high PSA, it is now acceppted that an MRI before the biopsy helps detect 20-25% more significant cancers than biopsy without prior MRI. Now we also learn that MRI helps detect a significant number of significant cancers for men with who pass the standard PSA test. Surprising?? AT autopsies of men 80+ age, over 50% found to have some PCa ! However, the cost of MRIs for all men over age 50??? I think what we need to do is more rapidly investigate the benefit of the latest and greatest ultrasound equipment.....most clinics have not yet purchased that equipment, though a number of studies have shown a benefit to detection similar to MRI !!!! In addition to the digital exam, simply insert the ultrasound probe in clinic. Surely researchers are prioritizing the study of the use of that tech as an alternative to expensive MRI???
