Abiraterone does not have to break the bank

Fore the last year I have been getting my Zytiga for free and now that has ended. My copay for the generic brand of Zytiga ( Abiraterone) was going to be over a thousand dollars. So I did some research and got it through my local pharmacy with a coupon from GoodRx.com for 139.71 ,120 tablets 250 mg with out involving my insurance . I may have to hunt around every month for a coupon but it is worth it for me and my insurance company. We have to be our own advocate but it is worth it .Maybe I will take a trip to Denmark with what i am saving . Thank you all for your encouragement with my last post. We are all different with the treatments for this cancer we have , but we are not alone my friends

Once my deductible is reached for my AARP/UnitedHealth Part D Medicare drug plan, I pay $167.45 for a 90 day supply of aberaterone. That is 360 250mg pills. The manufacturer is Quilu Pharmaceutical in China and the US distributor is Celltrion.

I have a policy with medicare part D and martin's point health care here in Maine, you have good plan to, the cost of these drugs can very so

I think one of the reasons for the tremendous variation in costs is the different manufacturers. My hospital specialty pharmacy gets their abiraterone from a manufacturer in China that is distributed by Celltrion here in the US.

I'm using Cuban's co for my other meds and am quite pleased. Their costs are about the same as Cigna's so it makes me question why I pay cigna.

Tall Allen, YES, it was very simple with Mark Cubans costplus.com I created an account, 9-18-24 then Dr added prescription. I just paid LESS THAN $100 for same size supply of 1000 mg/ 30-day supply. I selected "expedited-shipping" and had it in a few days. But I heard that insurance authorization can SLOW it down for other patients depending on your carrier. I tracked it by copying the code and putting it in USPS website and added it to my informed delivery.

I will shortly need to go on abiraterone as part of my treatment. In Ireland the public drugs scheme means that all family medication is capped at $90 per month. Will be interesting to compare the price over here and see if it brings me over the limit.

that seems so unfair. You might wish to look into the studies where you take one pill with low-fat breakfast instead 4 on empty stomach.

Just what i was about to say 👍

Do you mean they won't pay over $90 or you don't have to pay over 90? Can you get other insurance that you private pay for to cover the rest? Wondering if the cost would be worth it.

Sorry all my family meds are capped at $90. Anything over that is free of charge.

The pharmacist at the cancer center we go to gets us the zytiga generic for $10/month out of pocket. They have their own deals I guess with the companies? He also did all the legwork to get us the non-generic on the pharmaceutical company's coupon plan for another drug. My husband is 55 so a long way from Medicare. I'm just always waiting for some 'deal' to stop and for it to become unaffordable. Our daughter is on a med that's also about $7000/6 weeks US (11k with infusion services). So between her and my husband's scans early in the year we hit our max out of pocket (its almost 20k) early in our family. We also pay a couple thousand US every month in premium because we are both self employed. It's crazy. Family of 5. We have a crazy budget system to figure it all out.

Glad you found a work-around that's affordable for you.

If I didn't have an out-of-pocket cap, I'd be paying $55,000 a year for olaparib. $125/pill x 4 pills/ day x 365 days x 0.3 (insurance pays 70%).

Save your airfare to Denmark and go to:

Solvang (/ˈsɒlvæŋ/; Danish for '"sunny field"') is a city in Santa Barbara County, California. It is located in the Santa Ynez Valley. The population was 6,126 at the 2020 census, up from 5,245 at the 2010 census. Solvang was founded in 1911 and incorporated as a city on May 1, 1985. Solvang is often dubbed "The Danish Capital of America"

Am I understanding correctly that in 2025 total out-of-pocket for prescription drugs is capped at $2,000?

Dang, I hope that's true!

Yes, thanks to the Biden administration and the inflation reduction act.

Politics??? That's a simple fact, and the decision has saved many of us a ton of money!!!!

What's a simple fact? Inflation Reduction Act increase inflation? What's your point?

Jpburns in reply toMoonRocket

Who’s bring politics into this? This act saved us all money. You can say thank you to the folks who did it. Don’t be petty. We’re all here to figure out how to get through this.

MoonRocket profile image
MoonRocket in reply toJpburns

It hasn't taken effect yet so what money have you saved? BTW, I sure haven't saved on my groceries, insurance and eating out. All up significantly since 2020.

Jpburns profile image
Jpburns in reply toMoonRocket

So because we have to wait, it’s not worth anything? Sheesh! Look to the future. It’s going to be great.

MoonRocket profile image
MoonRocket in reply toJpburns

It's not worth what you're selling. It may help you, but not others, who now pay higher premiums to fund this coverage. BTW, you do know that the CMS is pumping in an extra 5 billion this year to keep the necessary premium increases from causing sticker shock. Election ploy no doubt. Let's see what 2026 brings.Eventually cuts will be made and the future won't be as bright as you are currently depicting. Fortunately, I can stay on employer sponsored medical plans for many more years so I'm not impacted and have time to prepare financially.

I just got a notice from WellCare about changes in my part D plan. It was going from 50¢ a month to…. 0¢ a month! Horrors!

Please peddle your fish elsewhere.
