Lupron just keeps on giving unpleasant surprises. My teeth are becoming loose and I must decide on implants vs. dentures. Have others gone down this road? My dental insurance won’t pay for implants. I’m wondering if my supplemental might as the problem is a likely side effect of treatment for PCA. Here’s a paper offering some justification.

periodontal side effects

Just had my teeth pulled and got dentures. I split my insurance billing by starting in December '22 and completed in January '23. Out of pocket was about 1K. Figured if I hate them I could do implants later. ADT destroyed my teeth but only on the top. My dad had same issues when he suffered from cancer
I'm a retired dentist. First, 68 men is a rather small sample. Second, there is no mention of looking at dental history. Many "diagnosed" with perio. disease may have already had it. Also, the average age of those on ADT was higher. Age alone increase the incidence of perio. disease.
A study like this needs a lot more men & a look back at prior history in order to come to true conclusions, IMO.
Yea, not a very good study, IMO. Others must agree as this paper isn't cited much as you said.
I can't say whether ADT causes or hastens periodontal disease; however, I can offer a few thoughts on dentures.
I have had upper dentures for about five years and they work fine -- no implants or denture adhesive -- the roof of your mouth creates enough suction to keep them in place. However, lower dentures are another story, and they will likely need either adhesive or at least a couple of implants to hold them securely in place. You should also ask if you have existing teeth that are in good enough shape to remain (and serve as anchors for dentures, especially for your lower jaw).
Implants vs dentures: having a mouthful of implants is dramatically more expensive. My supplemental insurance won't pay for them, so if that turns out to be the case for you, the decision basically comes down to whether or not you are comfortable with the extra cost.
Good luck ................
I broke my two rear molars after 6 months on it. Just don't do it longer than that or you will develop CRPC. Intermittent is the only way.
