Dr Nicholas Vogelzang has died

Well known and well respected Dr Vogelzang of Las Vegas died at the age of 72. He’d recently retired and was in hospice care.

What a loss for the Prostate Cancer community. RIP and thank you for all you did to help.

I heard Dr. Vogelzang speak several times at PCRI Conferences in Los Angeles. Along with Dr. Charles (Snuffy) Meyer’s he was one of my early “super heroes”. The PCa world has lost one of its stars. Doctor V. helped so many people with their struggle both in Las Vegas and from further away.

During the height of covid and its lock-downs I was trying to obtain Radium223 as a treatment part of of my care while my institution's oncology dept. regarded it as palliative for metastatic pain (which I did not yet have). I sensed Dr. Vogelzang's perspective would strengthen my request. So I made arrangements for a video relationship and signed up for a video consultation with him via his institution. This involved many phone conversations with a secretary and the eventual transfer of 299 pdf documents as well as insurance authorization. Two weeks before the video consultation the sec'y phoned me to say the video consult was cancelled; the Institution only allowed video for established patients. I would have to come in person if I wanted to see Dr. Vogelzang ... something at that point that I could not do. End of story ... except ...

3 weeks later I received an evening phone call. It was Dr. Vogelzang himself. He had been reading my file of 299 pdfs and had seen my attached questions. He was aware that I was not an established patient and that we could not have an official (or bill-able!) consultation. But he reached out to me anyway, out of the blue, with no further begging on my part. He gave me time; Dr. Vogelzang methodically answered my questions. He met me, over the phone, on a human level and shared his (substantial) expertise.

Dr. Vogelzang elevated Oncology by excellent science and humane compassion. I will be grateful for my lifetime.

that is a wonder story. I never met him but had great respect for him.

Thats sad, from the videos I've seen he was a real pioneer and wasn't afraid to think out of the box.
