Ideas for when you can’t swallow pills.

Grumpy has been through enza, abi and daro. These are all big pills that can’t be crushed to put through a feeding tube as they have special coatings. A compounding pharmacist wasn’t helpful.

Our MO says these drugs are not available in liquid form. Any of the smart people here have knowledge or any ideas on alternatives, other treatments?

All I can think of is more chemo after Pluvicto fails, if he survives it. Grumpy is now 79 with 22 years of PCA under his belt and despite comorbidities wants to keep on keeping on.

For my father, my mother used to make up some jello and when it was cool but just before it had set, she poured it into ice cube trays with his pills and let it set in the frig. It didn't dissolve the enteric coating (you'll have to experiment) and he was able to swallow the jello shots.

He is a tough old guy. He was in the ER on his birthday July 4th and needed to get a Foley catheter installed.

He still rides the stationary bike for 20 minutes in shorts with the leg bag flapping. He seems kind of proud to show it off. Proud to be able to pee.

That’s one hec of a 4th! Poor fellow .Good that he’s out . I know how that feels . I had tubes and a foley ,and 3 bags for 18 months then internal stents . I pray he gets to a better place ASAP? The first time I peed freely again was almost a religious experience . Thankful 🙏

I've been taking large pills for several years, pills that are rough and with defined edges, not like a capsule. For me it's a mental thing, and even breaking the pills in half, which doesn't have much effect on the time release feature, doesn't help me.

However, I found that if I take a bite of solid food, chew it and pop the pill in before I swallow the natural instinct to swallow kicks in and the pill goes down without a problem. I think, too, that the chewed food helps to smooth the swallow so the harsh texture of the pills is masked. Of course some pills have to be taken without food so my technique wouldn't be possible in those cases.

Most of the pills I crush, mix with water and use a small syringe to inject into the feeding tube. Some can dissolve on the tongue. I was just surprised that none of the prostate meds or Myrbetriq can be crushed which eliminates a whole category of people for treatment.

For some reason smashed banana works well as a sliding medium but haven’t tried it with the horse pills.

Have you tried swallowing the pill with pudding or applesauce? Also try putting the pill in your mouth then putting the whole top edge of a water bottle full of water to your lips and take a gulp of water. Google how to take pills if that is confusing.

Ugh...those "horse pills" as my husband calls them can be hard to swallow! I even have trouble with certain "normal" pills getting stuck in my throat. I have found coating a pill with butter or margarine to be helpful...slides down without getting stuck. Worth a try?

Hello:

This works, it really does, if in doubt please do a google search: put pill in mouth, take a sip of water, what you would normally use to swallow, tilt head all the way back like looking straight up to the sky; pill falls to back of throat (capsules you need to look down) with head still tilted back turn head slightly to about the 10 o'clock position... swallow...
