No longer producing blood

Has anyone experienced this? My dad is no longer producing blood . He’s had several transfusions and they’re stopping rehab because he’s too weak to continue . Help

The cancer sometimes infiltrates and attacks the bone marrow, which normally would create new blood. Some drugs (chemo,Pluvicto and Xofigo) can kill off bone marrow too. There's little to be done - the normal stimulants, like erythropoietin ,Neulasta, and platelet stimulants, only work by stimulating the bone marrow - if the marrow is dead, they are useless. Marrow transplants will only be attacked by the cancer again. I don't know of any good solutions other than transfusions.

They’re saying he can’t stay in rehab becaus he’s too fatigued for pt. He’s needing constant transfusions and is currently on no cancer care given his 5 week long hospitalization and still no word from oncology

Hi Stumpgirl, I just had a quick look over some of your posts your lovely Dad has beeb through a lot in this battle. Well done for supporting him so fiercly.Blood cells and bone marrow production is something I didn't consider when looking up treaents & monitoring results for my Dad. I didn't realise that bone marrow can be so damaged it can stop producing itself.

How long ago did cancer treatment stop? Was radiation /Xofigo,/chemo involved that could stíll be in his system? Did they do a biopsy to check for suppression or infiltration (sometimes this is not needed the numbers and length of time would dictate).

Is your Dad's pain being managed adequately?

Try not to panic, you have been phenomenal looking for information here for your Dad. Sometimes the replys aren't what we want to hear, I got migrane headaches scrolling for replies to match my hopes at one stage. Keeping loving him, keep having hope no matter what and take one day at a time x
