Protein powder

Hi to everyone.. I need your help with this…. What kind of protein powder do you all use to make your smoothie. I am asking for my husband, as I am the one that makes it. 1/2 cup home made green tea no sugar, 1 cup beet juice, 1 frozen banana, handful of blueberries and 3 large frozen strawberries. Everything I use is organic, no added sugar. I am open to all suggestions as long as it does not contain artificial sweeteners or a lot of sugar. Thank You, I read your posts all the time, don’t say much but take it all in.

If not vegan, whey protein is complete and inexpensive. I like the vanilla. Even fine with just water to minimize fruit sugar during the day. Vegetable only sources need to be a mixture usually in order to have all essential amino acids, as I understand it. Soy seems to trigger much controversy here!

in reply to MateoBeach

Mateo. Think I am leaning in that direction. Should I not be using the beet juice… I use it every day and feel great along with the fresh brewed green tea, but I don’t have prostate cancer.

I do not drink smoothies but do drink the following Protein Powder straight in water or in my cereal with added items-- (note the FIRST pictured *creamy chocolate fudge* is my favorite).

I use dried bone broth with Isopept protein powder made by EHP Labs. A little expensive but low in calories, I then use Collagen protein and dried peanut butter

Orgain. It’s at Costco and was formulated by a cancer survivor.

That sounds like a healthy and delicious smoothie.

There is nothing magical about protein powder. As long as it has no sugar added and is consequently low calorie. Better to get protein from fish and chicken if possible.

Remember that most people consume too little protein. You need minimum 0.7 grams of protein per kilogram. Hopefully not from hamburgers or fried chicken.

Also increasing your protein intake without also increasing your energy expenditure will just make you fat. Its amusing how many 'chubby' people say they drink protein shakes.

in reply to Jac_J

Agree

I'm not sure I get 0.7g/kg per day. How would that show up over time? Thanks

Jac_J profile image
Jac_J in reply to dhccpa

Well, have a look in the mirror. What do you see?

Thin with not much muscle? Perhaps weight training and extra protein would help

Chubby with no muscle? Maybe calorie reduction plus weight training will help.

Weight training is more important (by far) than extra protein. Unless you are already pretty lean with muscle definition. Then you will require more protein.

You cant really create muscle by eating or drinking anything. Only by hard work.

I hear you. Ànd I exercise regularly and am not overweight. I just haven't noticed any detrimental effects. I probably get around 50 g per day, give or take.

Don't trust photos on the Internet! In order to pose as a bodybuilder or weightlifter, I'd need to hire the man who faked the photos of the Loch Ness Monster. And he's deceased!

Seriously, most of my regime is moderate weight resistance, walking, stair climbing, swimming, and keeping weight down. It may be that, even though I've been on a plant based diet the last few years, my protein intake is about the same as always, just rarely from animal sources. But I haven't noticed any change in number or size of bone Mets, no increase in PSA, etc. Of course, being on Lupron for four years has dropped general energy levels, but I don't think I've lessened overall physical activity. I understand there are many different protocols being used on the forum.

We can only hope that it makes us all able to fight this awful disease a little better, if we throw everything we have at it, some of it has to help.....thats all I want for my husband! Hard to look at pictures of him just a year or too ago....he is so thin!!

I understand. I've been fortunate so far, but it is blood test to blood test. I had a bad feeling about the one last week, but it didn't turn out that way.

in reply to dhccpa

True Dh, a Recomdnded book on this site…”Your Blood Never Lies”. Extremely helpful for me, by James B LaValle.

After doing (too much) research, I started using Isopure unflavored Protein Powder. It's 100% whey protein isolate. Only other ingredient is soy lecithin.

in reply to rsgdmd

Yes, I agree with the “too much research”thing, that’s me, can’t stop researching and asking questions. There is a point you have to stop.. not good at that!

Organic bacon works for me. It assists in the assimilation of fat soluble vitamins. Best consumed on toast with a big pile of kraut, a thick slice of tomato, lettuce with 1,0000 island dressing. Best tasting protein on the planet.

Haha, I sense a mocking going on here ck722.

If you aren't vegan a high quality, organic whey such as LifeExtension sells would be fine. Health food stores usually have several brands.

If vegan, Sun Warrior makes a very good organic protein powder.

My drink begins by blending seeds which are the powerhouse of the plant. Blending opens, "nature's packaging" of the seeds. I use a heavy, glass, carafe which I keep in the freezer to keep the temperature of the drink down while blending.

I use only grass fed organic whey from New Zealand. Why eat what chemicals were fed to the cow?

Teufelshunde profile image

I use truenutrition.com. You can choose your proteins and they have many organic plant based (pea, rice, hemp, etc) and grass fed whey also. Pick your % of each. Pick flavor or none. Add BCAAs or not. Pick sweetener or none. Cost is about same as those on amazon but custom to you.

Sounds interesting, choosing only want you need and want.

My husband chose Vega Sport. Whether you use vanila or chocolate, when you mix itnto a smoothie with all the ingredients you need, they taste the same. Kind of expensive, but a 4 lb. goes a long, long way.

Smarty, WHO ARE YOU?! This is the best post ever, for me! Hope all of my guys read this! Thank you❤️

Jim use to take Creatine when he was bench pressing for USA but I stopped him, too worried it would make the cancer worse.

Jac_J profile image
Jac_J in reply to

I think creatine is a great low cost option to help muscle recovery. If your old with prostate cancer you have more important things to worry about then creatine.

If your old (> 75) with cancer its not highly likely the cancer will kill. Old age or cancer treatments will do that imo.

I think choosing to live a healthy lifestyle is important when you have cancer and when you dont.

Smurtaw jim was a world class bench press, last competition a year and1/2 ago, he never took steroids. He only competed clean, a member of the USA power lifting team no roids. It’s different now, we will be following your posts, keep us up to date.

Oh man, you are so young....dam this C! I read everything too, mostly at night until I pass out...your giving it all you have Smarty...so is my use to be, Big Jim! makes me cry every time!

Funny how your life can change over night… jim began lifting at 14 until 72 years old. What a blast for both of us!

Yes, I agree protein is on the low side. I could probably tweak up up to 65-70 without much effort. My weight is about 79 kg

Are you saying that that level of protein is better for PCa (metastatic in my case)?

Thanks I'll read those. And I do exercise regularly with moderate resistance. But I haven't concentrated on developing large muscle mass per se.

in reply to dhccpa

dh, how do you develop large muscle mass after taking lupron for 4 years. I see what it has done to Jim in only 6 months.

Thanks. I actually have taken creatine for about 18 months.

What's your recommended type of protein supplement? I notice Consumer Lab's overall pick is NOW Pea Protein (they also have recommendations in every category).

All right, thanks. Let me take that info and dig into it.

Thank you Smarty, reading everything you posted!

I will have Jim read your last post....went from 210 to 180 to 160 now at 155..ughLOL your Smarty to me!!
