Chemotherapy and Gout

After 8 doses of Docetaxel & 3 of Carboplatin, my partner has had two painful bouts of gout. He watches his diet carefully (pretty much has eliminated red meat & alcohol). is there a connection with chemo & gout? Despite asking his PP and MO, neither mentioned any. He did find something in clinical literature dating back to the 1960's.

Thirty years ago I had gout attacks. Allopurinol stopped it without side effects.you should look into that. When I went low carb in 2013, I went off the allopurinol, without recurrence of gout. I eat red meat every day, low carb since 2013.

It’s not the red meat.

Gout while easy to treat (most guys) with Allopurinol is kind of tricky on the prevention end. The list of suspect foods is long enough that one might starve avoiding them all. A wise doc once told me that most attacks were associated with underhydration and the chemical imbalances that go with it. When I get chemo the nurse keeps pushing drinks at me, pushing hydration I believe. -- I've been on Allopurinol for 30+ years; any time I feel a twinge of gout pain I immediately hydrate with 28-32oz of water and keep super hydrated for a few days. Works for me, never more than the initial twinge, quick too.

This is a list of the amount of purines in food. Beef and alcohol are always blamed for the gout episodes, but there are many other foods which contain far more purines than meat.

If there is a lot of cell lysis during chemo it could be an increase of purines in the blood. It is usually seen in patients with lymphomas. Perhaps it may happen with other tumors as well.

Tango, as usual, very helpful. Incredible his MO saw no connection between episodes of gout & Chemo (cell die-off?).

Chemo throws off everything . Cherries are helpful and lower sugar lower carb good for both cancer and gout

What brand of calcium do you recommend? Chuck is taking calcium citrate and I think it is part of the reason he continues to get gout.
