New Scan we have been talking about o... - Advanced Prostate...
New Scan we have been talking about on NBC NEWS this morning. Think they are talking about gal68-PSMA PET but maybe something newer?
I believe they are talking about the PyL ligend scan. Similar to GA68 but more widely available because of a much longer half life making it transportable to any facility with the pet-ct imaging equipment.
What got approved is the 18F-DCFPyL scan under the brand name PYLARIFY. The importance of this is that it can be used much more widely than the 68Ga scan because 18F is easily manufactured and shipped because it has a longer half life. You don't need a cyclotron on site. But given that it is a commercial product who knows what the cost will be. The press release is here:

Note that the "other" scan is not just 18Ga, that's just the radioisotope. What UCLA uses I believe is 18Ga-PSMA-11, so PSMA-11 is the ligand that attaches to the prostate cells.
This is an example of lame journalism where limited information is haphazardly wrapped in the guise of breaking news. I was a reporter in the decades after Watergate, and there is often a little "yellow" in the best efforts to share facts, but what I saw in this report was smug media stars who didn't even realize they were being smug. There is no public service in offering just enough buzz to generate public speculation without offering the 5W&H. Half truths create an uninformed populace.
