Soreness from lupron

I’m going Thursday for my 6 month lupron shot in my lower back/upper butt, and I’m usually real sore for about 5 days. Any suggestions to ease soreness? I run and lift 3-4 times a week, but I take off a week after the shot.

6 month are the worst. My wife has to help me put on my socks and underwear 😝

Hi Oct 18... I'm on a monthly dose, each month is different, most times I need a nap about 2-3 hours after they stick me ( injection ), then I apply ice to the injection site. I also find moving around /walking helps alleviate the soreness/pain. I'm coming up on my 9th month of treatment (missed 1 due to the Covid) , 1 year since diagnosis, so it's all a bit new to me. I do the 3 month shot but I ride my bike there and about 15-20 miles after it and I don't notice much afterward, maybe a little soreness near the shot when I lay on it that night. I alternate side of the upper buttocks each shot.

At the start, almost 2 years ago I had 4 month shots that were not bad. I may request something shorter than 6 months

2 years was that when it all started for you? I am barely a year into so no telling what I have coming my way. I hope you find something that works for you I don't plan on changing anything I the choice remains mine. I read theres a shortage of Lupron so not sure what I will find 9/23 when I arrive for inj. 5

I was told that ensuring the nurse warms up the needle by rubbing between hands and then injecting real slow alleviates the pain you are mentioning. Every time I have my injection the nurse knows the drill and it seems to work. Some nurses just want to get it over and done with quickly. I have been taking Lupron for 4 plus years.

When I switched to the 6 month shot from 3 month, on day 2 and 3 I feel a bit achy and the injection site is very sore. The one thing I do is ask that they inject far over on the right side so I can sleep comfortably.

After 17 monthly injections, I've found it helps to keep moving after the shot to help spread the Lupron away from the injection site, so I avoid going home and laying on the couch, and go for a walk or run. Even so, I get swelling in the ankles the next day, more on the side of the injection.

Three of my five six-month lupron shots have been uneventful: no pain, no stiffness. Two have left me with terrible hip-joint pain the following day. I now ask the nurse to poke as far from the hip as possible. Didn't help for the last shot.

Hip? Not enough fat there.... upper buttocks..... or stomach... where ever the RN can grab enough flesh to bunch up...... must bunch up... specific training for Eligard and aLupron injections

. Very different from most injections. You might watch or read hoe to give an Eligard injection and then the sane for Lupron injection. It could be, that your nurse is doing it wrong.....

Eligar is a sub-cutanous injection, like in the belly.

Lupron Depot is an intra-muscular injection, like the buttock.

Doc, I am not a physician. I can only relate my experiences; however my experience is that some inject in different ways. Whether I had Eligard or Lupron, it was always under the skin as I described. This might be a good discussion with your medical oncologist.

Actually Lupron can be administered either way - into the muscle or under the skin. As I described or as you described. We are writing about LHRH agonist drugs; which are essentially the same. Eligard is mixed on site and warmed to be given within 30 mins; Lupron is premixed and quicker. Ever wonder why LHRH agonist implants are under the skin and not into the muscle...... same drug.

I can only related my experiences; which did not included injection site problems as described in this discussion.

Some points, early on the RN would tell me to take the weight off of my leg to relax enabling her to grab an area of skin for injection. Once a new RN was going to “go deep” and the experienced RN corrected her in a “shallow” injection.

I asked about the lump remaining...... it will dissipate in 24-36 hours was the response. Look I could on with other antidotes......... if you are having problems with the injection site, discuss it with your medical oncologist.

I now have a my 6 month Eligard shot administered in my stomach and it is a breeze.

Normal. It is why I preferred Eligard. Only stings for three minutes.

I had Eligard initially two years ago and I still have knots on each side of my abdomen at the injection site. I guess it's just pick your poison and deal with the side effects.

I received both always in upper buttocks...... and always injected by an Oncology RN. Never by anyone else as the injection procedure is different from other injections and there are very specific training.

It’s refreshing to see other men have the same issue when I mentioned this question before no replies or others acted as if they didn’t know what I was talking about. My 82 year old sedentary dad gets his every 3 months for the past 5 years and he has a lot of pain I hear him complain and feel miserable about it , I tell the doctor but he too seems puzzled and says “he shouldn’t be having any pain from the shot” so yes thank you it’s good to know my dad is not alone and secondly the shot is indeed painful afterward. But to answer your question sure my dad has tried everything and nothing works he just tolerated it and complains to me what’s the alternative? Be happy for all of u that can ride or walk to get rid of the pain. My dad has bone Mets and it’s difficult for him to get from point A to point B Good luck

Thank you, and good luck to your dad, I'm 48 and it puts me out for a few days. This time I'll try to ice it and walk as much as I can tolerate it until I can run again which is usually about day 4 or 5.

I must be lucky. I have had 3 of those 6 month buggers and the injection site is a little sore for a day, but I hardly even think about it. I hope I didn't just jinx myself!

Lupron is delivered as two separate ingredients in the syringe that are supposed to be THOROUGHLY mixed before injection. At least two minutes of rolling the syringe vigorously between the palms of the hands.

When getting the shot don’t put any weight on that side. Lean on your other leg and relax. I usually avoid my brisk walking routine for a couple days after shot and do core/upper body workout instead.

I've gotten lupron injections in my buttonomus every 3 months for many years and never had an issue of pain..... but I do feel a little foolish riding home on the subway with my pants pulled down around my ankles......

I have been getting six month Lupron shots going on three years now. Im due 1 October.

I have found the amount of soreness I receive is dictated on how skillful the person that applies the medication. Each time I had it done at my oncology office I was sore for days, could barely bend over. I started setting up nurse appointments at my primary doctors office. I have seen the same nurse several times and I am never sore at all when she does it.

Join the crowd. The 6 month Shot feels like you got kicked by a horse. I usually use cold compression on the muscle for a few days after.

Try the tri-monthly shot. I did it for 18 months. My docs told me shots for life. I did an orchiectomy 9-17 and no mo Lupron shots. I m still on tak-700 stopping adrenal production so far . Good luck

Maybe you will be as lucky as I was. My first Lupron Depot 22.5mg hurted me for almost a week on the left buttock but the one that I got 3 days ago does not hurt at all.

Every shot I have had hurts for about a week. I take Ibuprofen. I also get the "lupron flu". On day 3 or 4 I am a wreck. Just like the flu-extreme fatigue, headache, major blah. That lasts about a day or day & a half. Then back to the gym like nothing happened. By the way I have a bad day like that about once a month. But my PSA is <0.01 so I am happy feeling lousy periodically.

Thanks to all for the advice. I told the nurse about warming up the needle. I applied ice to the injection site right after the shot and and had a long walk to find my car in the parking deck which also helped. I am happy to say I woke up this morning with very little soreness. I walked about a mile and a half this morning and applied ice more today so it definitely helped, thanks to all!

My PSA went from .02 6/4 to .04 7/16 to .09 yesterday 8/27. Scans show no new mets, but my 5 existing mets still visible but have decreased. Continuing on lupron and Xtanti for now.

Thanks for your report. I’m about to start Lupron. I am interested that you are also on Xtanti at the same time. How do you take Xtanti? (My PSA is 4.4 and a PET scan found a spot in my pelvic area a spot in my groin .)

I take four pills at night. I take them at night because it can make me sleepy. Since my PSA may be on the rise I may not be on Xtandi for much longer. I have been taking it for 14 months so I would imagine in the next 3 to 6 months my doctor may change my medicine, not sure what to
