It has pretty good sensitivity at low PSA - better than Choline, for example. Not as good as others. It detected cancer in 38% of men who had PSAs between 0.2 and 1.0. Unlike experimental PET scans, it is FDA-approved in recurrent men and is widely available

Is this like MRI and CT scan where it shows other non cancer things? I know you said it’s specific to prostate cancer but wasn’t sure if it shows cyst or nodules etc. like looks at organs and such

That's what "specific to prostate cancer" means.

Is this a CT scan along with Petscan or just a petscan by itself I’m confused on what is what exactly

PET scans and CT's are usually done at the same time in the same device.

So is the CT scan done on the whole

Yes. Most of it.

Now if they find the source and they radiate it or treat it - is it still able to be cured - or after one biochemical reoccurrence does that mean there is no chance of cure. Thank you

It depends where they find it. If it has not metastasized, it can be potentially cured.

If you have a PSA less than 2 and you are looking for new PC metastases it would be better to get a PSMA PET/CT which have a better detection rate at low PSA than the Axumin scan.

There are clinical trials for these studies:

If you are looking for other lesions in different organs (cyst or nodules) and to study the evolution of PC known metastases you could discuss having a 3T whole body MRI. I believe this type of MRI could be covered by insurance.

My husband had Axumin scan in June. At the time his PSA was 0.71. It showed that the cancer had returned in his lymph nodes , external iluac, inguinal and para aortic. Also back in prostate. Hope this helps.

I had an Axumin scan, it showed a met on L3 and a possible lymph node. Onco had me get an MRI which came back negative. So, he said the Axumin was a false negative.

My dad had it done it was very quick about 10 mins but I don’t mean to be a bearer of bad news the hospital discontinued using the test i asked why they wouldn’t say I thought it was supposed to be better than a CT scan or MRI but no one would give me an answer as to why the hospital stopped using it ?
