TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
Spinal metastases are a source of significant pain and morbidity, especially in patients with advanced prostate cancer. This study evaluated the impact of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) in patients with metastatic spinal lesions. In all, 59 unique publications with 5655 patients who underwent SABR for spinal metastases were included. The authors found spinal SABR was associated with 1-year local control rates of approximately 80% to 90%. The most commonly discussed adverse effect was development of a vertebral compression fracture, with incidence of 10% to 15%.
The authors conclude that spinal SABR may be an effective treatment option for certain patients with spinal metastases, with excellent local control rates and moderate rates of adverse effects. Further study, especially in the setting of oligometastatic prostate cancer, will be important to better understand biologic activity.
