Testosterone promotes red blood cells. If your anemia is dangerously low, they can give you erythropoietin.

Last blood test was only 2nd in 4 years where I wasn't slightly anemic. Quite common.

Hmm... Yep. My MSK MO says I'm "slightly anemic".

Here is last weeks monthly blood work...

Have stage 4 PC been off n on lupron 3 plus years constantly dealing with anemia, loss of breath, dizziness, weak, exercise daily which is my only defence will be 79 in May. I just declined radiation treatment, side effects possibilities not worth it to me as my quality of life is quite good play golf twice a week, pickle ball 4 to 5 times, travel the world most l could gain by accepting radiation 4 mos to year life expectancy rather live out my years not risking bowel incontinence.

My red cell count has drifted down to 3.8 I think it is common for our condition

Yes I did, I was on lupron for 20 months and I was quite anemic ,RBC, HEMATOCRIT, Hemoglobin all quite low and I was very fatigued after going off for three months it started to rise and in 6 months in the normal range again! My energy levels also normalized!

I became anemic but my iron was also very low. Two infusions of injectafer iron and the hemoglobin bounced back to barely beliw normal range. Go back in a couple weeks to see more detailed results

Yes, my MO has me start taking iron supplements - Ferro-Sequel brand available on Amazon. It did he trick, numbers are back to normal. I have my iron levels checked when I get blood work done every 6 weeks to make sure that they don’t get too high which can cause problems.

My numbers are low too. Is there any reason not to take iron supplements? Why is it not common to take them?

EdBar profile image
EdBar in reply toRayF

As Roches said, too much is not a good thing, just have blood test done to monitor. Also take them with with food and don’t take them together with Famotadine, it blocks absorption.

How long will you take these supplements ? Our MO suggested to stop at some point as its not good to take it continuously.

EdBar profile image
EdBar in reply toCheerr

As long as iron levels remain normal he thinks I should continue taking them.

Too much is dangerous, so needs monitored.

Are you talking about iron supplements ? What should be monitored ?

Too much iron can be dangerous, so if you’re taking supplements your doctor needs to know.

Yes, absolutely - I've read that this is typical for many.

It certainly was the case for me.

It also causes your immune system to suffer as well -see white blood cells for reference purposes.

I would encourage ongoing complete 'blood panels' at the same time as the PSA is checked.

That way, you can TRY to compensate for the anemia through diet and supplementation.

Quite common actually. It contributes to the overall feeling of exhaustion. One of the other lovely side-effects of ADT that our physicians fail to warn us about before giving the shot in the butt.

EdinBmore profile image
EdinBmore in reply toDon_1213

As noted, common side effect and contributes to the overall blah/fatigue feeling while on Lupron. I envy those who report few if any side effects. I was on the other end of the continuum. Found Lupron devastating. Anemia was only one of numerous side effects. Good luck to you. Edinbaltimore
