It’s fir my dad who is on ADT and psa started to rise. We are in touch with Dr Eleni at MD Anderson. Some mails also exchanged with Dr Eric Small in California and Dr Manish Kohli. Kindly give opinion if we are in right hands. Kind suggestions for better MO are welcome. Thanks

Those are about as good as it gets. There's really no need to reach out further. I've found that all the top MOs know one another and consult with one another. They are also likely to participate in each other's clinical trials. MD Anderson, UCSF, UW Seattle, MSK, Johns Hopkins and the Harvard hospitals probably cover most of the clinical trials, but even MOs outside of those institutions will be aware of them.

I've also noticed that when getting 2nd , 3rd, 4th, etc opinions from other top PC oncologists that they don't want to step on each others toes. This can be VERY frustrating and disappointing.

How do you tell the difference between "not wanting to step on each other's toes" and mutual respect for their opinions?

That's a good question. The answer is hard to put into words, but you can just tell. They seem to be a bit defending of your MO, while cautious with their words, and they don't discuss any follow up. They give you the feeling they're done with you as they walk out the door. That was 2 of the local MO's we saw. The MO we saw 700+ miles away at Johns Hopkins was much more candid, even though he mentioned he knows and talks with our MO. They ALL know each other!

We have seen, Dr Rettig (UCLA), Charles Ryan (UOFM), Dr Kwon (urologist, MAYO), Manish Kohli (at Moffitt, he’s now in Utah) and several radiation oncologists.

And I must say, they each have their approach. The one standout is Dr kohli is not a fan of early Zytiga. He appears to not be a fan of aggressive treatment, but rather of sequencing drugs to prolong life and preserving quality of life. I found that orientation this disease refreshing, and we did not choose his path.

Dr Rettig is great if you are in SoCal. Dr Charles Ryan is great. We are actually based most of the year in MN, but are doing treatment in CA for a variety of reasons. Drs. Family. Weather. My husband and I both really like Dr Kwon. He has an incredible bedside manner and is quite brilliant. He is a controversial figure in PC care, but we are fans. Interestingly, we have several Drs in the family and the consensus early on was to get an appointment with him. He’s a urologist, not an oncologist.

I am one of her patients. She got me got me to undetectable PSA 2 yrs ago with ADT, chemo (taxotere) and prostate removal in a clinical trial. So I shouldn't complain. But I have not been able to actually talk to her during any of my last 3 six-month visits to MDA. Obviously, she must be VERY busy, but I greatly value good communication when it comes to my health.
