Sleeping more...

Just wondering... my husband was dx in 2017. His psa was almost 1600. Has been .2 for a year after chemo in 2017 and then went to .3 in October 2019. Didn't do a psa in November. He's on Zytiga, prednisone, lupron and xgevia as SOC. But on last 3 weeks he falls asleep every time he sits down and falls asleep hard in his lazy boy every time he sits down... should I be worried???

I would return the lazy boy reclining chair. It is obviously defective if every time he sits in it he falls asleep. Ha. Ha.

Seriously, though, you might want to examine his night time sleeping patterns. Some men on the drugs we take may experience several deep-sleep-interrupting hot flashes per night, or weight gain that could exacerbate heavy snoring or sleep apnea.

He can have a sleep study done to see if he has sleep apnea.

I sleep a lot in the winter, 9 hours a day plus a nap or two. In the warmer months I'm lucky to get 6 hours in. I think i sleep a lot in the cold winter due to boredom.

I’m lucky if I get 4 hours of sleep at night due to lupron and the overall anxiety I have. Seems when I try to sleep my mind races I even take meds to help me sleep and nothing works. Perhaps your husband has similar issues.

Hello Hex40,

Darryl Mittledorf posted a question some time ago asking what people do to get more sleep. There were 72 replies! Maybe one or two of them will help you.

I read that post with interest. Lorazepam was a big help but it’s addictive and the doctor said no more. Ambian made me a raving lunatic. I’m trying Trazodone but it seems pretty useless.

I've been on Clonazepam as needed for about 10 years now. Never had a dose increase. Not everybody gets addicted.

Que terrible! You are melatonin ..or it didn’t help ?

As others have mentioned, the severe hot flashes and sweats can disturb sleep. Ask about venlafaxine or something else to mitigate the side effect of the Lupron.

Fatigue is the most common side effect of Zytiga. Exercise may help some.

Understand that metastatic cancer is not a party. Get rest; get exercise; stay positive.

Yes ... I see a lot if truth in what you all are saying. He's had a pretty dramatic weight gain... better when he works out and he's just started intermittent heavy snoring. Black Cohash is effective for the hot flushes but we just decided to take him off them as we read more about the side effects, which include weight gain and fatigue. He's also cutting his Lipitor in half. He tries to work out every day but something always intervenes it seems. Last 2 weeks was that awful respitory/sinus crud going around. He has hip pain too which wakes him but we think that's not a met but from lack of stretching.

We're thinking of moving from Henry Ford/Allegiance to the University of Michigan in the spring. HFA seems pretty pedestrian and sticks to SOC only. Won't even discuss supplements or nutrition. Any thoughts?
