Rissotto,

Not sure what a split is or why you would need one?? Are you recovering from radical prostatectomy?? If so, some incontinence is normal for most. (Hopefully, just temporary.)

Risotto, this last year I have had a turp and then an artificial sphincter Implanted. I can assure you that there was only mild discomfort at most with these two procedures. Dealing with the incontenance after the turp was not a great experience, but we all get through it. I don’t know if this helps or not.

I am now fully incontinent after a TURP six months ago. Was the artificial sphincter successful and effective?

Paulofaus, after being left incontenant I was given a Cunningham Bard Clamp. This was to say the very least uncomfortable and it leaked with any strain. I was then given an artificial sphincter. I am very happy with the sphincter after dealing with the clamp. I still wear a pad, but experience only “spotting” if you will. There is a learning curve in getting used to the “valve” implanted in your scrotum. I sit to pee as it takes both hands. One to stabilize the valve and one to squeeze the bulb. The bulb is tiny and hard to hang onto. I use two fingers to back up the bulb and my thumb to squeeze. As I said, a learning curve to deal with. Dr said about 50% chance of some leakage, maybe one light pad a day. Some days I have no leakage. I’d say go for it. Surgery was mild discomfort at most.

Thanks Olman, good to know. My incontinence got worse after radiation. My radiation Onc. said it would get worse, then get better, but so far it's only gotten worse.

What brand of artificial sphincter did you receive? Was there much brand choice?

Alan, I was not given a choice of brands, though if you google artificial sphincter you can find four or five listed. My Dr said that the AMS 800 is the gold standard and the longest in use of all on the market at present. It has some minor short comings that the others try to address, but they haven’t been around long enough for a full assessment. I’m satisfied with the AMS 800, but have only been using it a little over a month. There is a six week wait for all to heal after implant surgery before it is activated. You are basically back to normal until you have to “go” those few times a day. It beats the heck out of changing soaked pads or the discomfort of the Cunningham Bard Clamp. Hope this helps you and my fellow travelers.
