High psa

Hi,

Does a PSA of 170 mean that it's spread? No symptoms but PC diagnosed and local MRI of the area shows several small lymph nodes enlarged but I'm hoping more than anything that that is as far as it's got with the possibility of a cure

This is on behalf of my darling husband

170 is moderately high, so it’s a distinct possibility. Get a bone scan.

Thanks Tommy.

Yes we've had a CT and bone scan, I'm just trying to find any hint of hope whilst we wait

Biopsy needed to be conclusive. Biopsy trumps imagery.

Thanks we have biopsy tomorrow. I've accepted it is PC as the doctors have confirmed that based on DRE and PSA level. I just hope more than anything that a cure is possible

Even if a cure isn’t possible, there’s loads of different treatments which work really well. I’m still enjoying life 7 years after a dx with a PSA of 571.

Be positive in all things. I read the Desiderata from time to time if I’m feeling low. I’m not religious so don’t have faith to rely on, just a belief in humanity.

Thank you so much Tommy

What treatments have you had? 7 year's is great

I’m in the U.K. Stampede trial, arm G. Abiraterone, Prednisone and Zoladex. No alternative therapies, no special diets, a drink or three twice a week, a mixed diet of meat and vegetables, no fish at all ever.

We're in the UK too

I hope my husband can get onto the Stampede trial as results look good. Only worry is that he had a silent heart attack (as in he never knew he had one at all and was picked up on an ECG year's later) so think he might not be allowed on it : (

Not sure on the criteria, or which arms are open at the mo. I’m at urology in Stockport next week, I’ll ask where they’re up to. Stay positive!

I’ve not read that poem in over 30 years. Forgot all about that one. Thanks, I’m printing a copy.

I think that men with PSA above 40 or so are most likely metastatic, i.e., their disease has spread outside the prostate region. The CT and bone scans should tell you what's going on. MRI and PET scans are also sometimes used.

But do take heart from TommyTV's 7 years after diagnosis with a PSA more than 3 times what you've got. There are others here like him too. New treatments are in trials and in development and I think survival times will keep getting longer and longer.

Best of luck.

Alan

A quick update, just returned from the hospital after husband had biopsy taken.

They've advised that no bone mets could be seen. Now need to wait for CT results.

Don't know whether to breathe a sigh of relief or not

A key issue is the Gleason Score that will be determined from the biopsy. If it 8 or 9 then its likely to be aggressive and needs treatment before it leaves the prostate. Prostatectomy, or various radiation choices are what will be offered. I had proton beam therapy in South Korea (I live in Sydney, Australia), which in my opinion is the Rolls Royce of radiation treatments. If you want more details on my case or want to learn more about PCa, get my best-selling book "An ABC of Prostate Cancer Today" from Amazon.
