Wednesday last, I celebrated my 12 year anniversary of diagnosis metastatic PCa. I continue to remain undetectable. Not too bad. There have been subtle changes lately. Twelve years in Lupron and 5 years on Zytiga should have ended any possibility of physical intimacy but I am beginning to have a slight Libido and I have full function. Since starting ADT 12 years ago I have not needed deodorant or antiperspirant. Now occasionally I will pit out. All in all things are good. There is hope men. Todd

That's a very encouraging update! You have an inspiring story, thanks for sharing!

I'm nowhere close as far as treatment longevity: just over third month on ADT and in the middle of docetaxel chemo. But I do keep the device functioning by having sex 2-3 times a week, I heard they say "use it or loose it" applies here! I have no idea how it works with 0 testosterone level but it does. Keep it up! (and the pun is intended) ;)

12 years is very good, Libido is nothing when you compare it to WALKING AROUND and can bitch about it.... Keep walking and keep bitching for another 30 years..

GOOD LUCK.

Been on ADT for 18 years, I'm still walking she's still bitching but we love each other to the hilt every single day......

Great news!

Wow this is so encouraging! I spend many days crying and praying for my husband. His diagnosis 2 months ago has devastated me. The best I can do is stay in the moment but I’m frightened. To even dream he can have years with this disease gives me some relief. Thank you for sharing and happy to hear you can find some joy with inspirational words gives me some hope. God bless you

Hi Cloc,

My wife had many tearful nights. It was rough in the beginning because we were a new relationship. We married one year after my diagnosis. Your husband has been diagnosed with this disease at the best time in history to be diagnosed. There is a lot of money being thrown at prostate cancer research. There are many new treatments in the last few years and many more in clinical trial. It is very possible that your husband could outlive you. I hope not for your sake. I personally know a guy in Olympia Washington who has had advanced prostate cancer for 28 years. I encourage you guys to assemble the best healthcare team you can find. Do your research. Surround yourselves with knowledgeable people. Be your own advocate. And don’t be afraid of second opinions. I have been blessed beyond my wildest dreams. I intend to dance at my granddaughters weddings. I intend on being there when I have great grandchildren. Stay positive. There is hope

May I ask, I don’t want to be intrusive....but they see some cancer spots on his pelvic bone and cardioperatoneal that they are going to radiate beginning next week. Did you need radiation? I supppse I’m asking bc I’m always measuring ‘how bad is it?’ No one wants to talk about it but here on this blog. I am so incredibly grateful for the sharing that happens here. Thank you Todd

Cloc,

You are not intruding in anyway shape or form. I totally understand as I have been there and so has my wife. I did a lot of comparisons in the early days myself. When I was diagnosed I had bone metastases in my pelvic area and I had a lot of tumors in my lungs. I also had widespread lymph node involvement and unconfirmed metastases in my brain. I never had radiation. I was simply on Hormone therapy which worked well for me. When I was diagnosed there wasn’t a lot of the treatments available that we have today. I always said if I could get six months out of every prostate cancer treatment that’s available I would live 30 years. I’m not making light of the situation as it is going to be a challenge but there is hope. hormone therapy which worked well for me. I always said if I could get six months out of every prostate cancer treatment that’s available I would live 30 years. I’m not making light of the situation as it is going to be a challenge but there is hope. Radiating bone metastasis he kills the cancer and alleviates any pain or just comfort think your husband might be having. When I was diagnosed treatment philosophy dictated hormones only until they failed and then move on to other forms of treatment. The philosophy has changed. Oncologists are more inclined To aggressively treat the cancer. Outcomes by doing this are far better.

Todd1963 profile image
Todd1963 in reply to

Also I would like to say that you will both be learning a lot of new terminology. One of those terms is hormone resistant or hormone refractory. They both mean the same thing and that is the cancer no longer response to traditional androgen deprivation therapy. It happens. Each case is different. Sometimes men do well on hormone therapy for many many years. Sometimes not so much. If and when the day comes that the oncologist says your husband is hormone refractory or hormone resistant I encourage you to look at Provenge therapy. Provencial is a prostate cancer vaccine. It is also called an immuno therapy. It trains you were immune system to fight the cancer. Insurance usually covers it. It is very expensive. In my case however I believe it was worth it.

Right on Todd! Thanks for posting this, I believe with my whole heart the that prayer is the reason for my 12 year survival. The supplements you take are the only ones I have taken with regularity. Potassium is needed while on zytiga and many of these drugs as zytiga depletes your potassium.
