I live in Northeast Ohio (Cleveland area). Still relatively early in the PC saga with metastatic, hormone-sensitive PC. Currently on Eligard and XGeva with decent results for about one year (PSA < 1.0, three bone mets decreased in size since starting treatment, and no new mets). Have not had any operations, radiation, or chemo yet. Current Urologist and MO are very by-the-standard-book medical people with very little interest in looking at alternatives.
I am quite aware of the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospital here in Cleveland, but have not yet been able to identify a prostate-specialized MO. I have access to a very good RO, however. Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions regarding a progressive/aggressive prostate-specialized MO?

Hi, Kooss. My husband was diagnosed in December 2017. We live near the Moores Cancer Center which is part of University of CA, San Diego. It is an NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. I too wondered how to choose a medical oncologist. What I discovered, and may also be true of the Cleveland Clinic, is that the oncologists do specialize there. PCa is handled by 3 medical oncologists who specialize in genitourinary cancers. Further, 2 of them focus primarily on prostate cancer. Even the radiation oncologist specializes in genitourinary cancers. What I especially like about the Center is that my husband’s care is coordinated at one site. There are also clinical trials done there. My thought is you may find a similar setup at The Cleveland Clinic. It’s worth a consult since it’s close to you and has a good reputation. In any case, I would first look for a NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. We are very happy with my husband’s doctors and they inspire confidence. My best wishes and hope you find doctors, treatments, and technology that inspire hope for you.
Dr. Sharifi is at the Cleveland Clinic and specializes in prostate cancer research. Not sure if he sees patients or just does research. He was my MO when his practice was at UTSW in Dallas.
