Advocating for yourself at the doctor

After being told 2 times that my daughter's symptoms were those of depression, I asked for an evaluation based on what I saw in my daughter. Guess what? She has ADHD! The psychiatrist admitted to missing some signs, even though I brought in a list of 15 symptoms to be considered. If I hadn't pushed for further analysis, my daughter would be stuck being treated for depression that she doesn't have.

Everyone, please speak up for yourself and those you love!

Husbandlover,Hear hear! Females are still vastly under diagnosed because of "missed" symptoms (how do you miss what is written on the page, like your list?) It's outrageous to think we are still not hearing women about themselves.

Nicely done, your daughter is lucky to have you.

Thanks so much! The doctor admitted that symptoms present similarly in boys and girls. WRONG! She called my daughter's list of symptoms "ancillary symptoms" that aren't truly diagnosable. Things need to change for girls/women!

I medicated ADHD can cause anxiety and depression, just to let you know. They are occurring disorders, actually.

Good for you. There are also treatment guidelines to follow from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.
