Looking for an accountability buddy

Hi all,

I'm a young (male) person living in the U.S. and right now I'm looking for an accountability buddy.

The part of my ADHD I struggle with the most is context-switching, where the longer I spend doing one thing, the harder it is to start doing something else. This makes it so I can only work in short bursts, with long periods of stasis in between, because if I have to stop working for any reason it just completely pulls me out of my flow.

I have a lot of goals and personal projects which make this arrangement basically untenable, so I'm looking to make a change. I'm trying to find someone who I can meet with for regular check-ins and coworking sessions, to keep me on track.

If you're interested in being my accountability buddy, please let me know! And if you have advice for how I can find one, please let me know.

Welcome to the community here!

I'm open to the idea. I think I could also use an accountability partner.

There was someone on this forum a couple of months ago who was putting together a small group for daily check-ins, but I couldn't commit to meeting that often. But in your profile you mention the idea of meeting weekly or biweekly, and I can do that.

I think that you've got a good idea, to reach out and find an accountability partner. One that could be easily duplicated.

Maybe I could be a good match for now, or maybe someone else here could be.

I'm 48, a dad, work in Information Technology, and I'm on the East Coast. I'm on this forum almost every day.

BTW- If you want to check out other ADHD groups and forums, I've listed the other ones that I've joined in my profile. So, if you don't find the right partner for you here, maybe you can on one of those.

Hi STEM_Dad,

This works out great! Right now I'm trying to self-study coding and software development, so there might be some overlap in what we're working on. (:

If you don't find anyone here, try Focusmate.com!

I've heard of Focusmate.com several times, but isn't it used for body doubling? And isn't it a paid service?

There's a free-to-use video body-doubling site called Focus101.com that was started by a fellow ADHDer. I haven't tried it, but I heard about it on one of the ADHD podcasts that I follow. (I think it was on ADHD Essentials, but I'm not sure at the moment.)

• The site creator does take monetary contributions, but he seems to be pretty altruistic in his motivation to create the site.

• I think that Focusmate helps people find other people to connect to. I don't think that Focus101 does the same.

Yes, it is for body doubling. Focusmate is only $5 a month and they are also altruistic. The nice thing about Focusmate is that if you use their Facebook group, you can try to find other users who are interested in the same type of work you are and then coordinate your sessions with them. They have members from all over the world, so you can almost always find someone who wants to work when you do. Whatever works for you . . .

Good to know. It's always good to find out how well a service like that actually works for people.

Guys, I would like to join. I'm 51 and I got diagnosed just before turning 50 and I cannot take any Rx due to mood swings and sleep sensitivity. Needless to say I'm going 100% natural with supplements, diet, exercise, better sleep, etc, but I hear you, ADHDEveryDay, it is a constant struggle and regardless of which specific decade of our lives we're in (you didn't specify your age), I think we can all learn from one another.

Context switching is HUGE and yes, it's an enormous drain on cognitive resources. That said, I've been learning to lean into the effort without caring so much about the result and that, oddly enough, has started yielding better results.

Anyway, shoot us back a note and let's see what we can set up. I'm looking for work at the moment, so I may be less available once I'm employed, yet we have to start somewhere.

I've seen STEM_Dad's comments on a number of postings here and he's a wealth of information and I'm quite sure wisdom on these subjects as well. I very much welcome the opportunity to finally meet him too.

Gents - I leave you to it. The easiest thing for me would be to set up a recurring Google Meet every morning, but I'm open to suggestions.

I don't know why this diagnosis as an adult turned everything upside down and now managing post-ADHD diagnosis has become a 24/7 job, but we can make progress and beat it. One day at a time.

Cheers

Gents - What's the verdict? Who would like to set this thing up and be adminitrator? Just checking back in.
