My family doctor writes my prescriptions. It has not gone well over the past ten years. She frequently vacations for weeks and doesn’t submit my prescription or alert me ahead of time. Currently- she’s been trying to submit my prescription for Adderall to my pharmacy electronically but has been having technology problems. She’s out of the office until next Monday and periodically checking in.
Most importantly- I take my last dose tomorrow and then I’ll either be out and experiencing withdrawal or okay if somehow the technology situation improves.
I’ve been thinking of switching to a different doctor and/or psychiatrist.
I recall reading psychiatrists, family doctors, and neurologists a free the doctors able to prescribe.
Which type of doctor fills your prescription?
additional if possible-is your doctor good about alerting you when he/she will be away if it were to overlap with you being due for a refill?
Thank you!

My doctor of 4 years just passed away two weeks ago and the new doctor I have is horrible and very judgmental. She called me up the other day and told me that she will no longer be prescribing me my Adderall. She gave no reason why, I have been diagnosed with severe ADHD and I've been on this medication for 4 years. I have lost my job as a paralegal because of this. Because I'm not able to function without my medication. I need help finding a doctor that will help me as soon as possible and that will not judge me and actually care about my health
Sounds like your doctor has ADHD! Should have a staff that takes care of all those details.
I go to a psychiatric nurse practitioner for meds. Couldn't find a psychiatrist in my area who took insurance. Love my nurse practitioner--she's every bit as good (and not as expensive) as psychiatrists I've gone to.
Prescribed by my primary care physician-internist. I am just beginning medication and in the second month of treatment. While he does not seem to be highly experienced with ADHD treatment he has been timely and effective to date.
If you have a family md willing to prescribe ADHD meds for you, I’d hang on to them for dear life, at least as a back up. Getting an rx from a new doc can be really hard.
Can you ask your insurance company/pharmacy if they’re willing to retrieve an Rx early and just not fill it until it comes due? Mine does that.
Before I got my current psychiatrist (by getting cancer…) I paid out of pocket for a nurse practitioner psychiatrist. That’s more affordable than a doctor if you don’t have insurance coverage. My family doctor was willing to prescribe between visits as long as that specialist was also covering me and dealing with medication adjustments.
If money is not an issue, I guess it opens many options.
I see a psychiatric nurse practitioner virtually and she’s been great! If she’ll be away they just schedule me with another one so my meds get called in.
My psychiatrist prescribes my psychotropic meds. Sometimes, depending on the pharmacy, they can front you a few pills until U receive your refill. U need a more reliable doctor. Also if U have a psychiatrist U can possibly receive therapy with him or her as well. Good luck
I just started medicine. Psychiatrist. I doubt my family medicine MD will rx. I live in a large metro area with good access, though, so know I'm lucky.
