So I recently moved to a new state and had to find a new psychiatrist. I procrastinated finding a psychiatrist and ended up off my meds for about a month which was awful. I felt like I was in a constant state of crisis. I finally found one and have had a total of three appointments. I was told for my first appointment that I should plan for 90 mins and follow ups would be 50 minutes. My first appointment was very casual and he just spent a little time getting to know me. That appointment was no more than 25 minutes. I thought it was an ok meeting but was surprised that it was so short. I promised myself I wouldn't jump to conclusions about my new psychiatrist yet and would test out a few appointments with him. My second appointment was only 15 minutes. And my third was only 5 minutes!!! I was so disappointed. He said I was good to go and gave me my next appointment date. And I asked him if there was anything else we needed to talk about and he just said he was good unless there was anything else to talk about. Even just asking him that took a lot courage so I definitely couldn't get the courage to initiate conversation about how I really need help treating my ADD. I wouldn't say my previous psychiatrist really helped me treat my ADD apart from medication, but she always asked me the same questions (how much sleep am I getting, how is my mood, how are doing at school/work, how are you doing at home). I was with her from 2001 to 2022. She asked me this very routinely and every couple of years, my answers to her questions would prompt her to prescribe me for anxiety or depression. But this new guy didn't ask me anything in this last meeting which is it was only 5 minutes. Is that normal?I was kind of optimistic thinking that i was starting new with this new psychiatrist and we could really work together to help me treat my ADD. I really need more help than medication alone.
Do you think I should try to find a new psychiatrist or does anyone have any suggestions for how I can better work with my current psychiatrist? And if anyone has had great experiences with their psychiatrist, I would love to hear about your experience and how it was helpful to you.
