Third day taking meds and I was expecting something different.

Hi everyone. This is my 3rd day taking ADHD meds. I will have to clarify just how terrified I was to even try it. As in, I was expecting for my heart to go crazy racing, for it to give me all of this energy that made me anxious and hard to come down. However that has NOT been the case. In fact, i get a little laid back and tired when taking them. My heart rate is not even affected. It’s not energy that I have it’s mental clarity and motivation to do things. I asko did NOT get irritable while doing certain chores as I’m usually losing my mind. I used to always feel anxious and in a rush to just get whatever done fast and back in the bed. But these last 3 days i am taking my time without realizing it u til after the fact. Another strange thing is my vision. I’ve been unmediated my entire life and i hated going anywhere because it’s like I could not see things clearly. Even with my prescription glasses. But on the meds it’s like things just see crisp. My anxiety is almost non existent. All of that noise in my head is pretty much gone. I feel very very relaxed and happier. I surely hope this continues and i have to say the outcome has been the total opposite of the fear i had.

Which did come from other adults that i know that have ADHD and they seem worse and more hyper and. Anxious on their meds than off. So naturally that’s what i Expected.

What has been your experience?

The dosage can play a big part. Too much over medicates you and speeds you up. For some people the type of medication can also play a part. For some people medications like Adderall and Dexedrine have more of a speed up affect.

Everything you said as to how your body reacted to your ADRD Rx was mostly the same for me. The tiredness after 1st taking it with pass with time. When I got my 1st Rx, the Dr told me it might make me sleepy. I got the Rx, and read up about it. This stuff is amphetamines! This is Speed!. It's not going to make me sleepy. So I took it when I got to work (I was working midnights at the time). I could barely keep my eyes open. And then I thought, this Dr may be right! As I read up on it, it all made sense (check out Dr Hallowell and Ratey's 2 books, "Driven to Distraction' and 'Delivered from Distraction'. They explain a lot).As for the others Adults? Maybe the Rx dosage was too high? They had systems of ADHD but have a different issues? If I take too much Rx, it makes me jittery. It's unpleasant!

Congrats on finding your way that should put you on a better path.

Enjoy the relief, peace of mind, the sense of calm.

I'm more like you. I feel more emotionally regulated, and I can think more clearly. My brain is less foggy and feel like some kind of depression has been lifted. A lot less irritable and I seem to be able to handle more.

It's funny because I know an adult who has been on ADHD medication for years and he he is always super hyper and unfocused, and the stuff that comes out of his mouth makes me dizzy. It kind of made me nervous when I started my meds.

Possibly him and the people you know have more going on than just ADHD. Or I have wondered if this guy I know is actually abusing the drug. ADHD is both the most over diagnosed and under-diagnosed mental disorder. So there are a lot of people taking it that shouldn't be and a lot of people that should that aren't. But no judgement from me. All I know is it has helped change my life around, and it has positively effected the people around me that I love.

It actually took me a lot longer than 3 days to get to a dose that worked, and to really understand and see how it was helping me, so keep working with your care givers. It does seem like with most stimulants for me, the first few days there is a bit of a feel good feeling, or like you have more energy that seems to fade. Kind of like taking caffeine. Or maybe I'm feeling really hopeful because I'm trying out this new drug and I really think its going to work. But then that seems to fade. So maybe that is something to watch for that no one seemed to tell me about.
