I’m having a hard time getting myself to start taking Adderall again. When I was in my twenties, I abused it for a few years. As I grew up and ten years later, I was put on lexapro and wellbutrin. I have severe panic attacks but not as often thanks to the Wellbutrin... but I just need something else!! I can’t focus, I can’t complete a task, I’m in a fog while driving and I remember what it was like to take Adderall and it helped so much. But what if I break out in a massive heart attack from it? Please help.

Instead of Adderall, what about other options? I take a number of supplements along with Adderall to help me and I have to say that I have seen huge improvements. I'm not sure if your ADHD psychiatrist does this or not, but if not, find one that will give you a DNA test to determine what you may be missing in your body. For instance, my DNA showed that I have a hard time processing Folic Acid and my serotonin processing is messed up. I take supplements to circumvent the process and I like what it's doing. I like it so much that I weaned off Wellbutrin and have no more need for it.
Hi there, I have inattentive ADHD and take supplements along with stimulant medication.
I highly recommend you consider the supplements N-Acetyl Tyrosine and L-Tryptophan for your issues with panic attacks and task completion/fog issues.
A strategy plan when it comes to supplements and ADHD, should include aiming to help the brain with the specific neurotransmitters that give us the most trouble. The following neurotransmitters should be addressed.
Dopamine : A neurotransmitter in the brain that affects your levels of concentration, motivation, pleasure senses, and sense of pain.
Norepinephrine : A neurotransmitter and stress hormone that deals with attentiveness, emotions, impulse control, planning ahead, sleep, and interpreting actions of others.
Serotonin : A neurotransmitter that deals with mood regulation, sleep, nervousness, empathy, appetite, digestion, and sexual urges.
Acetylcholine : A neurotransmitter that deals with muscle contraction, pain responses, mood regulation, REM sleep, and coordination.
if you click my profile pic, it will take you to my profile, where in my bio you'll see theres a link of a google doc I made of every supplement I take that includes ones specifically to help those low neurotransmitters I mentioned above. It mentions what grocery stores and online stores (Amazon has all of these supplements a lot cheaper than markets like Sprouts and Whole Foods) sell these supplements, and some information about each of the supplements and how they help out people with ADHD, in case you're interested.
Your profile and google doc post is what lead me to create a profile on Adult ADHD! I can completely agree that taking supplemental vitamins works great! Since reading your vitamin supplement post, I have begin taking tryptophan and folic acid with medications, and the results are marvelous.
It is a trial and error process. Everyone is different, but I would recommend starting ones that you're concerned with, at a lower dose and raising it if necessary. Your body and mind will be the best judge of this.
I'm 56 - 225lbs I was on Ritalin in the beginning then adderall, provigil, vyvanse and now vyvanse 40mg with provigil 200mg. I'm also taking celexa 40mg for depression / anxiety / panic (works great for the panic disorder). So far nothing helps for me with focus, wakefulness and completing tasks. Ritalin did in the beginning, finally felt alive. God Bless!
Wow! I'm sorry that nothing seems to be working. I'm 53 around 225 as well and I'm finding that Adderall works best for me. However, it was when my psych gave me a DNA test and put me on different supplements that I started making huge leaps in my career and overcoming depression. Where at least once per day I had some sort of thought of suicide, it was now gone. I had not even realized that it was gone until a monthly check-in. I would suggest asking your dr. about the whole DNA test option along with different types of supplements that might work for you. It helped me enough to the point that I have now brought on a life coach/therapist who specializes in adults with ADHD. Her therapy is a little unique, as it involves walking/hiking as we talk. I have to tell you that about midway through each appointment, my guard is down enough to get real and honest about what's going on. I think getting that heart rate up helps a ton here and am seeing further benefit.
Check out Eclecticentric77's doc that he posted about. That might help you get started. ADHD sucks, especially when you have depression as well. You almost need to get to the point of being so angry that beat yourself into submission or realizing what you are up against.
When I begin my ADHD medications, Iv too had trouble with Adderall but have since found a better medication alongside with taking supplements! As mentioned, I would suggest taking vitamin tryptophan. I have recently begun taken it and have noticed I am able to interactively engage with a clear focus. Also, I take folic acid, probiotics, and Super B-complex as these help with enteric nervous system.
