Hello, I just wanted to see if anyone has any advice for skin picking? My daughter is 5.5 she has ADHD, combined type. She currently takes Clonodine at night for sleep, we've never had any issues. Lately she has been picking at her fingers, she says she's picking off the dry skin on it? She calls it "fake skin" I've tried lotions, bandaids on all of her fingers, medical tape, fidgets, remainders, positive praise, you name it. I don't know what else to do. School has contacted me about it twice, and she hasn't been able to participate in sports because it has been consuming her, she just stands there and picks at her fingers the entire time. She isn't able to listen when she does it, she is so fixated on it. Is it anxiety related? Medication related? Has anyone experienced this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Finger picking
it can be a side effect. Some docs would call it a tic or nervous side effect. You may want a gene sight test to see if the med she’s taking has adverse effects.
I’ve had this issue with my cuticles for YEARS. A close friend recently taught me about a product called cuticle remover. It basically turns the sharp bits into sludge. You can do it once a week (they say twice). After you apply it, you use cuticle pusher to rub on the bits then wash hands thoroughly. If she sees anything after she doesn’t like, you can use a cuticle cutter to snip a bit off. After a few weeks of using it, I almost never chew my fingers anymore.
We were recommended to give vitamin b complex and magnesium. I can't say it made much difference. If anything is bleeding, then tablet time is lost. I bought a pack of princess gloves to wear at night (or at home when it's bad), after using aquaphor (also applied in the morning before school). She picked out a pair for school and her teacher was agreeable/ helpful, but I can't say she wore them much there. ADHD medication lessened the issue initially, and at that time she started everything was being picked. I tired l-theonine also, but had no luck. Aquaphor is a daily habit now at least, and helps with damage control. I have a tube in the car for right after swim class, or if I see her picking in the car I can ask her to use it.
I hope you get some helpful responses!
That's a good idea, the aquaphor. Praying it eases up as the weather gets warmer. Thank you!
Our grandson picks hus face sometimes it bleeds. From what my dictor says the adhd medication causes it. We've temporarily stopped one of his meds and then increased guanfacine (2mg in the morning and one mg in the evening) have benefited from it greatly. No more bandaids and gloves at school to prevent him from the picking. He says it itches. Talk with your doctor to press for a solution. One other grandson used to bit his fibger and toe nails criterially low, some times bleeds until his mom/doctor prescribed guanfacine 1mg in am and pm. Then he stopped.
