Hello, For the last year we have noticed my sons behavior getting worse. He's been struggling in school and we couldn't figure out why. He was just diagnosed with ADHD today. Any help is appreciated.

Just go with the flow. When we started medication (10mg Methylphenidate per day - don't know US name) we saw a great difference in school. You have to balance that with the effects of the meds wearing off later in the day - the meltdowns can be wild. We didn't want to add another dose to counteract these as over medicating is not good. We find exercise helps, bike rides, parks, walks and if at home, fun exercises like star jumps etc. Side effect of meds is lack of appetite - only late in the evening does hunger return so don't force feed or deny anything like junk food when they are hungry, candies, fast food etc all have necessary calories and some nutrition. Our ADHD Consultant agrees that any food is better than none. Weight and height measured regularly. Most importantly, remember your child cannot help their behaviour and should never be punished for it. It is a lifelong disability and while they will learn tips and tricks to help them cope, as a child it is frightening to have a brain that never stops and understanding why is tricky. Never listen to the folks who tell you he is just naughty or attention seeking. He is your little one and it's your job to love him and help him negotiate life.

my high schooler was just diagnosed last year. We have learned a lot in the last year and working with a psychiatrist has really helped. I understand so much more now. It will get better. This group helps!

Hi, Leepartyof7,

Parent training and support groups might be really helpful for you. At CHADD, we offer both if you're interested. These resources can provide useful information on how to parent a child with ADHD. Remember, it's a learning process, and you're doing a fantastic job!
