Wanting to try new ADHD medication

My daughter and I are willing to try new medication for grandson. Our main issue is a lack of focus at and at school, and excessive talking. We've seen the difference medication xan make but, we have been oyt smart by our winderful 6 tear old boy. He would swalliw the pill no matter what we gave him to take it with. Our insurance wont pay fir the Daytrana patch until he fails at his second medication. Haven't talked to the Dr about the next step yet.

He doesnt have any really serious problem but the medication could improve focus and reduce the minor tempertanrums that we experience when he can't have his way.

I'm trying to do the research but I'm not really understanding what to look for and I want to make a comparison to what the Dr might suggest as a next step.

Options include the extended release capsules that you can open and sprinkle on food, chewable or dissolvable pills such as Quillichew or Contempla (if insurance pays for them - they are expensive) or Vyvanse (can put into a small amount of liquid and drink it down - has no real taste). Talk with his doctor.

I took have a 6 year old that has major temper tantrums whenever he cannot get his way or is asked to do something he does not want to do. He does very well at school though THANK GOD. He is on Contempla it is a dissolvable pill that is a extended release. This is his second medicine he has been on and it works great so far. He has been on it for two months. Strattera is a non-stimulant that was the first one he was on and it worked okay for awhile. We had to keep on having to up the dose for it to work and then it just got to the point that it did not work. But who knows that might work for your grandson. Every child is different. My son did say it burned his throat though cuz he cannot swallow a pill yet so we had to mix it in liquid or yogurt.

Hopefully that helps you.

My son is 6 and we have had good luck with Dyanavel XR, extended release bubble gum flavored liquid. Plus he is on a supplement called Vayarin which after several months is helping immensely with emotions and outbursts. Good luck. Keep trying until one works.

Hi.. Do you need a prescription for Vayarin? My son is on Focalin and Intuniv too. And we tried Vayarin for a few weeks now but I feel he gets more irritable when the meds wear off in the days he takes the Vayarin. It could be a coincidence. Did you have to give it every single day for it to start working? Also did you notice any irritability in the beginning?

Hello. We did not notice any side effects. It took at least 3 solid months of daily use (2 capsules) for us to notice a difference. Now, maybe 5 months in, he is markedly more level headed. His impulsiveness is more controlled. The other day I offered him the option to delay a reward a day for something better the next and he took it. Very forward thinking for a 6 year old with ADHD! Vayarin and Dyanavel is our magic combo for now. Good luck. I think your observations were likely coincidence.

Oh - and no prescription needed. Get it directly from them through the website.

Thank you so much Reeeba1. My son is 6 years old too and sounds so much like your son!! Impulsivity is main issue and your reward story sounds just like the struggles we have everyday!! Half of my paycheck goes towards rewards😆

We have been using only 1 capsule a day. Did you give 2 capsules from the beginning? And is it to be given at night ? Will try for some more months and see. Thank you so much
