Guanfacine Er: Has anyone had sleep... - CHADD's ADHD Pare...
Guanfacine Er
My son had night terrors and nightmares on Guanfacine ER. When he started the med at 1mg, it lasted around 4 weeks before going away (maybe 3/4 nights per week at first and then frequency reduced each week after that). I kept track of the days in a log, along with any other side effects, which helped when discussing with his doctor. When we increased to 2mg a few months later, that side effect came back but for only about a week that time and then went away again. It’s possible the side effect your granddaughter is experiencing will resolve itself as her body adjusts to the medication. If she is having a good result from the medication and she isn’t losing too much sleep, it might be worth it to give it more time to see if this side effect goes away or not. In our case, it did. Good luck!
Daughter only experienced sleep disturbances when it was taken at night.
My son sometimes had nightmares on Guanfacine immediate release at bedtime, but they stopped after we switched to Guanfacine ER in the morning.
Timing matters. Our psychiatrist said in can take 6-8 hours to make you sleepy. When my son was taking it at bedtime, he was up all night. We switched it to right after school and now he's generally tired at bedtime.
It might pass with time, but experiences will vary. I believe I've read that guanfacine can take up to several weeks for some people to fully adjust to taking it.
Is she taking it in the morning, or in the evening? If she takes it in the evening, then maybe changing to an earlier time of day would decrease the effect on her sleep and dreams.
It's likely that these effects will diminish or fade away within a few weeks to a few months. However, I believe it's also possible that they might continue.
It's hard to say, really, because each person responds to ADHD medications in their own way.
Her doctor needs to be kept up to date on how the medication is affecting her.
I hope that at least she is experiencing some improvement in her ADHD symptoms.
Thank you She is taking it in the morning It's like the effects of the med wear off in the middle of the night and she wakes up and is ready to get up The Er is not covering her for 24 hours Mornings before the med kicks in she is very hyper I almost feel like she is more hyper then ever when it wears off before kicking in
my daughter was for about the first 3weeks or so. She was on 1mg and would take it around 4pm (after school) the meds were helping her aggression and outbursts and she wasn’t losing too much sleep si we decided to stick with it. She is now on 1mg but twice a day (1 before school 730am and one around 630/7pm) and she had had the issues again but only for about a week. So far this med has helped us more than any other so we stick with it! If just keep a log on anything you notice and let her dr know!
Guanfacein was initially a med to lower blood pressure. Since our blood pressure lowers in sleep, her body could be waking up due to it getting too low for safety.
