Hello, my son was diagnosed at 4. No meds always worked hard in school. Fast forward …now in 7th grade - comes home angry - hates school day - teachers drone on and on. Think it’s hard for him to sit and attend. Also struggling with getting getting assignments in.

Can anyone make suggestions for his IEP?

Does your child have a 504 plan? If not bring a letter to the school asking for a 504 plan to help him. Let us know if you need any more help.

He has an IEP. Just not sure how to help him. he can’t sit that long. needs to do something else. finished work quickly.

Can he get any specialized or small group help a couple times a day? Having someone assigned to him to check his class assignments and a smaller setting to help him focus to complete work. Also, maybe some of the teachers can make special allowances for homework. Right now my son’s homework is in IXL, he only has to complete 60% of his homework compared to 80%, which the rest of the class needs to meet. The teacher knows by meeting that % he still understands the work.

Good idea to add to his iep ab checking his assignments. I was just wasn’t sure if there’s some kind of accommodation that helps with the whole sitting still he brings gum, fidgets, etc. just grows angry as the teachers repeat themselves so far he’s done really well in school and is eager to please. His teachers enjoy him. I just feel for him to see him come home from school fit to be tird every day.

The issues you are listing are related.to impulse control and focus and children with ADHD lack these skills. Have you considered medications? The main goal of the believe it or not is to help with these issues. When taken and it is the proper type, correct dose and given at the right time can really be life changing.

I hate to say it but he will soon be in high school and it gets harder and they need to work more independent.

Hope you find what helps quickly.

I know this isn’t answering your question. Has he ever tried medication for ADHD? If not, I would seriously consider it while increasing his school support.

my 7th grader is having the same issue. His IEP out lines he is to have accommodations for testing as he doesn’t focus and if he needs a test read out loud he is able to go to another class and take it.

I did just start a tracker to see if that will help keep him on task and hold him accountable for his action during the day. I am also doing this with my 9th grader. He did just start qelbree which during the day was making him just sleep so now he takes it at night and is sleeping all night and then he is rested for the day. Maybe if you need to try meds you can speak with your doctor.
