I’d recommend parent coaching like PBMT. Find someone trained in delivering this intervention. Most likely a therapist or parent coach. There is no evidence to support CBT or individual coaching being effective for children with ADHD. (Individual therapy could be useful for addressing child self esteem issues but not for reducing adhd symptoms). Best wishes!

Hi Lisa, PBMT stands for parent behavior management training (i.e. parent behavior therapy or parent coaching like the evidence-based Triple P or Incredible Years programs). Non pharm methods are an important piece of ADHD treatment. Good for you for trying those techniques as they require educating yourself, making changes at home and effort on your part. Implementing that added structure can reduce challenging behaviors and family stress while increasing calm and connection.

Thx for getting back. I’m in the early stages of just beginning to search for a therapist or what you mentioned . I was going to try that triple p. I’m glad you mentioned it.

Yeh I’m hoping to manage the outbursts and the behaviors. How would I best go about trying to find a pbmt ?

Kind regards

Also triple p has an online directory of providers. I believe you can search by state.

When interviewing folks ask if they are trained in a pbmt program. In the meantime for the outbursts etc, you could check out Ross Greene and lives in the balance site online. And don’t take her behaviors personally. She’s doing the best she can right now. I know it’s hard to manage and live with as a parent but you can do it. You seem resourceful and motivated.

thx for your support and valuable info

It’s been tough, I would like to have her md and the neuro psychologist be at her next IEP meeting. Her father wants to stay clear of all meds and I am open to both. When does one gauge on what to do with the type of therapy of med vs behav

When it comes to academically being behind ?
