my 17 year old not taking his meds and as a result it's impacting his behavior

I just found out my son a senior in Highschool has stopped taking his medication as he says it alters his personality and makes him tired and quiet. He's led me to believe he's been taking it, and only when he has done something stupid that is getting him in trouble because his lack of impulse control he Tells me. He has a girlfriend that told him she was physically violated last year by another student at same school and he was so Angry when he found out in the parking lot of school that he saw the kids car and kicked his mirror, as a result the mirror fell. Now he has to go to principal with the school police officer. He has admitted that was really a bad decision and feels bad about and Is worried he can get suspended from school.

He has also been skipping some classes and he always has a reason for it.

He's also been playing a sport all his life in a competitive level where he wants to play for college. I'm wondering if this action of his could impact his chance of doing what he loves and play for a college.

I'm so sad and worried. Any suggestions appreciated on how to help him.

This is the year he is suppose to be focus on applying to colleges and I don't know how to get him on track and stop making bad decisions.

Thanks!

So sorry you/he is in the situation. Being a senior is very hard becuase they just realize adult life is very close and the safety net they have had their whole life will end soon. This is scary and a little exciting.

Just wondering what other supports he has to help him? Sounds like thearpy, to help deal with the emotions and transitions to adult life could really help him.

What about a different type of medicine that could help him control himself. Medication for ADHD come as stimulants and non-stimulants. As you realize this is a pivotal time and he sounds like he needs help. It sounds like he needs help controlling himself.

Wish you guys the best.

thank you for your suggestions. He has started taking his meds again and I felt that helps with the impulses. I just hope he doesn't stop taking them again.

I've been trying to find a therapist that knows about adhd but they all seem to not have availability. If you know of any recommendations please pass along.

thank you again!
