Intuniv and fatigue

Intuniv and fatigue...

We are on day 3 of Intuniv 1mg at night. About how long does the fatigue typically last? TY!

For us it lifted after the first week. It returned again when we went to 2mg then normalized. Hope that helps.

Hi there, this lasted about 1 week with our son also.

All the best with the medication - this helped our son so much and didn't have the nasty side affects unlike the Vyanse he was on.

My daughter is on 3 mg, she takes it at 7 pm and it helps her to fall asleep by 9 or 9:30. If it is having an immediate effect that should subside in the first couple of weeks.

Hi MomofBells - how old is your daughter and is Intuniv her primary med or is she on a stimulant as well? We are still trying to get the right combo for our daughter and are just increasing from 2mg of Intuniv to 3. Would be interested to know you experience and how you settled on 3mg as the right dose.

Stimulants were not well tolerated by my son so we are trying Intuniv. Good luck with finding the right combo for your daughter!

She is 10 and takes Adzenys (6.1 mg) in the morning. Last time she weighed in 66 lbs, but that was about 3 months ago. She needs an in crease on that to the 10 mg (how do I know?? Because while trying to eLearning at home she is running through the house pretending to be a bird). We are trying to hold out until July to start the increase dosage so she will gain as much weight as possible before the increase will suppress her appetite (she is eating like a horse, another indicator that her stimulant is not as effective). Because of her ADHD, she has trouble going to sleep at night so the intuniv is helpful in that regard. It also provides the mood stabilizer she needs- she has pretty severe emotional swings - especially under the current circumstances. She has been on the 3 mg for a couple of years. Through therapy she is starting to learn to control her emotions better, maturity will help that as well. We are grateful that she has responded well to the meds we have tried. Her father takes meds as well so we were able to base some decisions on her meds based off of his experience and success with certain meds. Genetics are strong.

We have experimented with taking her off the Intuniv and just giving her the stimulant and by day 3 she was rolling around on the kitchen floor asking when she could start it again. She is very aware of how her medications help her function better. Through therapy she is starting to learn to control her emotions better, maturity will help that as well. We are grateful that she has responded well to the meds we have tried. Her father takes meds as well so we were able to base some decisions on her meds based off of his experience and success with certain meds. She has been on meds since she was 5 - started with clonodine and that worked for a couple of years until she was 7 and started on the stimulant/intuniv combo.

Thank you! My daughter is turning 6 but very tall and big for her age. She sounds very similar to your daughter. Since we started this journey in the last few months, we have determined my husband likely also has ADHD that was never diagnosed or medicated. He recently started blood pressure medication and did say that a good side effect is feeling less stressed and calmer. My daughter is very hot headed and easily frustrated and cannot regulate her emotions. In some ways she is like a 3 year old and we are full on experiencing the terrible 3’s now. Her behaviour can be so terrible sometimes, it’s exhausting.

Some days it feels like we will never get on top of managing this. It’s good to hear from others who have had success.

For info, For the intuniv we started giving it to her at 6pm but she was sleeping in really late the next morning, so we slowly moved it back to 5pm. That seems to work well.

You will! Cognitive behavioral therapy really is more effective when they turn 9 or 10. In the meantime, medication and 1-2-3 Magic were lifesavers for us. My daughter was suspended from Pre-K and we started on the path to getting an IEP in the public schools. That was an enormous help. She has ‘graduated’ down to a 504 in 4th grade. Accommodations are crucial in providing support in a classroom environment.

I know it’s hard ... believe it or not stimulants can help with emotional behavior as well, but we felt good in waiting until the clonodine didn’t really work anymore and we needed to try it.

Don’t be afraid to try things... you can always stop if it doesn’t work. Don’t get discouraged if the first, second, etc. doesn’t work. It takes time and a little experimentation.

You are doing great by getting informed and educated! You are your child’s most important advocate!!

Yes to CBT- it is such a great tool as they get older. My guess is that we will revisit stimulants after the hyperactivity and mood are stabilized.

Both of my grandsons are on Intuniv 2mg. If they had any at first they did not mention it. They do great on it.

Our son has been on it for a few years and we have not experienced any fatigue. We take a dose that last 24 hours and he takes it at bedtime. It is very helpful for school.

My son has been on it for 9 month 1 mg and us 60 pounds he doesn’t have fatigue anymore

It was continuous for my son. He couldn't stay awake at school so had to take him off.
