Need some advice

So since my son was diagnosed Jan 2018 (he is now 9), we found that therapy, routine and visual aids helped him a lot and he did not need medication.

Fast forward to now and we have had some issues with him at home with Lying (he will lie about little things mostly), sneaking candy/binge eating it (even when we hide it and put it up somewhere), and lately with as much trouble he has been getting into at home he is starting to feel that we don’t love him etc. And feels that everyone everywhere is bullying him.

Also he has a hard time with out of home activities (like church), does well in school because of 504plan.

We might start to think about medication and I have just been nervous to start that only because I don’t have that much info on it (but will start to learn and read up on it).

Are these traits he has common in boys with ADHD? Thanks for any and all input.

Yes... you sound like you are describing most boys with ADHD...

The worse part is the demand at school gets much more, social and home also just gets more challanging. Imagine what is ahead with the transition to middle school going from one classroom to ( in most schools) up to 6-7 teachers.

It sounds like you have many things already in place. I recommend you work with a child psychiatrist ( I know I thought another thing to do) but they are skilled at knowing what type of medication, the best dose to give and when ( am only or am and pm). Most medications are short acting which is good and bad. It means it enters his body and within 3-4 hours it exits. These medications should not change his personality, but help him with controling himself. The symptoms (excessive talking, not listening, etc. ) will go away.

I will be honest.. it's a trial and takes a while to get it adjusted correctly. But after 1-2 weeks you will see such a difference.

Keep us posted so we can answer any questions and support you through this part of the journey.

Take care!

From all the resources I’ve read, those traits are extremely common. My 10yr old who has been medicated for several years now still does it. ADHD is impulsive, so children just blurt our whatever their minds think without thinking first, so even if your son knows there is no reason to lie, he most likely won’t realize it until after the fact.

My son will ask me many times in a day, if I love him and if I will always love him. To which I tell him over and over...no matter what he does or says, I love him unconditionally.

Medicine will not take away ADHD, but it can help keep it in check. But don’t stop helping your son learn his triggers and how to cope with them.
