Forgot medication - detention

My son is 13, 8th grade.

The day he forgot his medication, the school had a "code black drill(evacuation).

While they were outside in evacuation area, his friend started to play with his school ID, throwing to the fence. So my son say, let me try it.

Guidance teacher saw, gave my son detention under the category of "violation: horseplay"

I emailed all his subject teachers that he is off meds, however, I did not include guidance teacher.

I know he should be talking/playing while these drills and take it seriously. and I will have him serve detention.

This event did not sit well with me. as if he does not even get a benefit of the doubt

and labeled.

I like to hear how you guys think......

I am sick to stomach...right now...

Sounds like a tough day. I too have found that no one can relate to what it actually means to be off meds. We have worked with the school to provide back up meds in this case. Middle school was tougher, I had to speak to medical director of the county school system and get a note from his doctor to allow for it. High school is so much easier. The nurse has a few doses and as soon as he realizes he forgot, he can just go take it. Best of luck.

This is a great idea.. so much easier than driving back to school to give him a dose.

Thanks..

That is a great idea. We've not had our long acting medication with us a day or two this school year (it got left at Grandma's.) So I gave him his short acting in the morning, then packed a small can of Coke into his lunch bag for the afternoon. I'm sure it wasn't as helpful as his meds, but that's what I use in a pinch. (The dentist isn't gonna thank me.) And I let his teacher know to break out the fidgets. (She uses pipe cleaners - which seem ingenious to me.)

Another staff member at my son's school said a mom left Mt. Dew with her for the days dad forgot to give his son his medicine.

Wow - that is truly rotten timing and a really tricky situation. I'm sorry to hear he got detention.

I would probably discuss it with the school, though be ready to accept if they feel the detention needs to stand as is.

Hope things have settled down a bit.
