IEP Confusion

My 12 y.o. is in a new school this year. It seems his IEP services are different now. He had been receiving 3 hours/week with the special education teacher outside of the classroom for math support. He was also getting (3) 30 minute sessions with the special ed teacher inside the classroom for Math and Language Arts.

This year, we are being told by the principal and IEP team lead that the in-classroom support for Math and Language arts will not be provided by the special ed teacher. I am told these services are being provided by the general education teacher. The special ed teacher will only provide math support outside the class.

I am confused about this because I do not see how both teachers can step away from their teaching duties to provide the 30 minute sessions my son is to receive.

Does anyone have similar experience with this type arrangement? The IEP does not specifically state who should provide the in classroom support. Both teacher and special ed teachers are listed as staff who are to provide in class support.

Please help.

Janice_H-

Are you working with Sp. Ed. Staff or people at his new school site.

An IEP is a federal document which can not be changed without the teams approval. You should call an official IEP with Sp. Ed staff ( not a principal or counselor) if they are until to provide what was happening at the last school they need to provide you with what the options are.

Most schools will have an initial or interim if they need to make changes and this has to happen in 30 days.

Best of luck.

Yes I work with the special ed staff at the new school and the old school for clarification. I have also called the school district special education unit and was told the same thing - either the special ed teacher or general ed teacher can provide in classroom support. We have an IEP meeting scheduled in 2 weeks.

I would wait to see what is said at the meeting.

Some people hire advocates to help them. When they ask for parent concerns tell them and don't sign the parts of the IEP you do not agree with.

Good luck

Thanks. I just can't seem to get clarification. Even from the district.
