My son was finally given a formal ADHD diagnose and was referred to a behavioral specialist. I also want to know from your experiences what kind of accomodations can I ask for him in school? I want to hear from all of you.

Thanks

My son currently has an IEP but we will be getting a 504 plan soon which indicates that he has a medical diagnosis and needs special support. He currently gets to sit closer to the teacher and front of the room, extra time on tests if he needs it, the teacher is asked to remind him of things because he is very forgetful, he can take “breaks” when needed to go into the hallway or a quiet place and calm down. I’m sure I’m missing some things and would love to hear what others do for accommodations.

To advise on accommodations in school I would need to know more about his behaviors. ADHD can manifest differently in different kids and accommodations are very subjective for each child. Also how old is your son?

We have two children with ADHD and both have very different kinds of ADHD. Our daughter sounds like your son... she is very fidgety and can't sit still, has a very hard time concentrating and retaining certain information... she is also very messy and though she apologizes and tries to clean up she doesn't have the concentration it seems to maintain any kind of order in her room for example. She is on medication that really helps in terms of school work. Even though she is below grade level she is making progress since we put her on medication. In terms of accommodations in school I would say definitely ask for some one on one (in speech, reading, or OT), I see he already gets longer times for test taking which is good, he might benefit from taking tests one on one with the teacher and not with the whole class if concentrating is an issue. He might also be allowed movement breaks if he has a hard time sitting for a long time. It sounds like he is already getting breaks and time to calm down if he needs it... there really isn't much else I can think of... both our kids pretty much get those kinds of accommodations... Ultimately I think medication is the best help we can offer them.

Hi, Please look in my posts ( there is not many ) for IEP help. I don’t know how to link it here. I posted all the accommodations my son has.

Courtney85, A stimulant impacts an ADHD brain differently than a neurotypical brain. An ADHD brain is structurally different and lacks an adequate level of dopamine and norepinephrine.

Hi YEMS. Is you son on medication? I know when my son was diagnosed I was against meds but things at school just did not improve. It was really hard to have him follow instructions, not get distracted or impulsive in the classroom even with a plan in place. My son is now on a prescription and we have seen lots of changes even in grades in the three weeks of school. Anyways I am from Canada so I am not sure if things are different but I have requested a scribe for my son for all exams. I have also requested that notes be given to him before class so he can follow along or that they give him a chrome book to so his notes. He has a chrome book to complete all writing assignments if he needs. I have also requested extra time on exams and review sheets of the exam before hand. I asked the teacher to just check in with him after instructions are given to be sure he is on the same page. Anyways good luck with everything. It is hard but I am not glad he is on medication. He has even said likes how he feels on his meds than not on his meds.

I’m thankful for this post. I joined today. My 5yr old son was diagnosed with ADHD this past Thursday. Was looking for support and found this site, I’m sitting here bawling my eyes out because it’s real now. My baby will need lots of help and support and I have to make sure it happens. I didn’t understand what I was going through until I began reading posts that sounds exactly like I could have wrote it.
