IEP /504

We all want our children to be the best kids at school. However my 7 years old son who is extremely smart but impulsive and has no executive functions whatsoever, can be difficult to deal with at times . I find it hard to deal with my child study team when having his IEP/504 . They are super nice but if they don’t think he NEEDS something they won’t hear you and simply the answer is NO .I don’t care what the regulations say ,Parents has to be loud and a pain for any one to hear their concerns however if his teacher or social worker believe that his accommodations are good enough then it is enough. All what they care about that the child doesn’t have an F and that they didn’t make any mistakes in their time frames and paperwork and following the procedures to the dots so they don’t get in trouble.

The problem with ADHD that a lot of staff are judgmental about it and don’t believe it excist .

My son teacher is one of them she make me so angry that I wished that her child gets it so she would understand what is my child going through.

Does that make me a bad person ????

She minimize all his symptoms and says “that is him been himself “ and every incident is am isolated one . Yet she punish him when he gets in trouble, she avoids taking points out for his very bad hand writing so she doesn’t have to deal with it.a bad day at school is because the “hot weather and everytone has a lot of energy “

If he looses his glasses and I email her she compline that he never told her as if he knew that he lost them. Simply she doesn’t get it and she has more say than me in his IEP/504 meeting.

And now they want to declassify him because he is not failing..

Sounds like you might benefit from a child advocate. Do you have a medical diagnosis and is your son on medication for ADHD? Over the years you have the opportunity and responsibility to help your child develop that executive function. Help him organize and complete his work. If his ADHD is severe, he likely needs a full IEP if you are not getting satisfaction with 504. If he's had a psychological, then all the recommendations for education need to be implemented. It sounds like he may have some dysgraphia as well. Education at home as a supplement is vital. I have one of these boys who is now a senior making straight As. It's a battle so stay in it for the duration.

Take for example the failing grade issue. I look at it as It's not about not failing, it's about what kind of effort is it taking for the child to get the passing grade?

How much time is he having to study?

How many times is he having to redo assignments, quizzes, tests, projects?

How many minutes is he spending on homework each day?

How much help does he require from you to do all of this stuff or is he able to work independently?

How much progress has he made from the beginning of the year to the end of the year?

If he has an IEP, has he met the IEP progress goals?

The reason I bring these questions up is I have a son in high school who has decent grades, but the effort it takes to get those grades is herculean. If we based keeping his IEP on grades alone then he'd lose the IEP, his accomodations and within a few short months his grades would plummet and I'd be back at square one with trying to get the IEP back again.

What a waste!

This is part of the explanation you can give. That having the IEP and accomodations is necessary to support your child. Losing it is counterproductive. Everyone is supposed to be working together as a team to help your child succeed, not send him/her into an environment of failure.

If your child was failing before the IEP and doing better with the IEP in place then you have proof the IEP is working and shouldn't be stopped.

Good luck!
