Hello. IEP generally includes any specifics. My son's IEP includes pretty much what the 504 would include, such as extended test time or oral tests. What kind of accommodations are you trying to get for him that is not in his IEP?
Like to get one on one helper in inclusion class he already have one special ed teacher that deals with6 to 8 kids in the inclusion class( in which regular ed kids and regular teacher also there ).
Due to his distractions the special ed teacher said me try one on one helper or para but child study team didnt show any positive sign .
I understand that, it can be very frustrating. I am not sure if they will offer one-on-one. Our school, like for math, there is 3 children to one helper and they do 10 mins of one-on-one per student at the end of the class. Each of these 3 boys have different diagnosis, so each need different techniques used to help them.
Here's a link that can better distinguish between a 504 and an IEP. You may have to copy and paste it, but from what I understand an IEP encompasses everything. We have an IEP meeting each year because the needs can change from year to year.
He is pulled out at the end of the class on certain classes and for certain timed tests. He is not in the self-contained set up. My son has Asperger's, ADHD, a mood disorder, he has had one possible seizure recently that we have to go get an EEG for here soon, oh and he is going through puberty. He is highly intelligent, he just has to pace occasionally. Most of his teachers are understanding and seat him in the back of the class so he can get up when he needs to in order to pace. Fidget spinners do not work for him, but I read in another post about a weighted vest. I am going to check in to that and see about the costs.
You can amend your IEP. Just a suggestion, but you can call and talk to your special education department at the school and tell them you feel the circumstances have changed and you think it is best that he is recessed for his educational needs for his benefit. You have got this, it is the Super Mom power!
Yeah in Ist grade i successfully able to take him out from the self contained in kindergarten they did that little forcefully .
This year my son is in inclusion so i have a fear that in 2nd grade they agin not put him back in self contained all day .,instead pull out is better i think
In inclusion he is doing ok but teacher says he needs more initiatives and praise and cues to start work otherwise he keep sitting and distracted easily thats y i was thinking of personal helper . Well let see what happens now pray for me please .
My child is not that super intelligent just avg and also that depends on hus one to one and instructions he gets from his teacher
I think an IEP is more detailed. Itβs not as easy to get as a 504 because a CST has to run test and do evaluations. The pediatrician and/or neurologist can recommend either one. I had a 504 plan but I wasnβt able to get an assistant for my son until I got an IEP.
same question for you as well Can you share please your son is in self contained setup all day or whats the arrangement or pull out plz if u dn mind share ????
Iβm a lawyer. Under federal law, schools must accommodate children with disabilities. A 504 Plan is your request for a reasonable accommodation for your child/student. This link may help webmd.com/add-adhd/childhoo....
Friends my son was considered for 504 after his pediatrician wrote a letter to school. I tried not to differentiate him from rest of the class so that it will not effect him emotionally. He is becoming more confident and able to make friends. I feel a person care at home will be more beneficial. But at school they should be treated equally with others so that they can mingle with the crowd and have some friends. Definitely teachers has to provide some special attention as per 504 plan as well as the expectation from ADHD kids should be different. Each of them are super intelligent and very good I certain field. They are given super power by God and very special. As parents we have to take care about the emotional challenge they face rather than studies. Some what a concept like "Wonder" Movie. Another beautiful Hindi movie is there "Tare Jamin Par" means Stars on earth. Hope it helps.
If you already have an IEP, you should modify the IEP to reflect additional needs. I have never heard of having both a 504 and an IEP. Our school wouldn't give us an IEP for years, and instead gave us a 504. When they finally gave us IEP, 504 went away. IEP is more enforceable than a 504. Schools should still follow both, but in our experience, they did a poor job if following the 504.
Yes the neuro doctor can write review n the diagnostic that child is elegible for 504 or eip. Then you take this paper to school and they must start the process to sign up
Processes take a long time and, sometimes, it it's only beginning. Before my son started his new school for 5th grade, I met with the guidance counselor and vice principal. This was before any "official" problems were documented but he was on my radar screen and had been followed by a neurodevelopmentalist for his stereotypical movement since kindgergarten. Initially, they thought I was a helicopter mom. Fast forward 8 months, the light bulb went off for a 504 - and yes we again, got a dx for the 504. The 504 didn't have a lot of teeth to it. The plan can also place major demands on teachers (so it may not be practical) so it may be hard to implement with all other responsibilities. We did proceed this year to an IEP. B/c his anxiety was really ramping up, we further went to a school program called ESS -Effective School Solutions - where an outside company is contracted to have a person on site who runs a program - group counseling, individual counseling, family counseling. We just upped his medication. The ADHD has also affected his self-esteem, so this is all tangled up with his all of his dx - ADHD, Anxiety, little OCD, Perfectionism, Stereotypic movement (like a tic) & gifted. But I "think" things are improving somewhat - at least a home. School, I'm not so sure. I just know it is a journey and can take years to get what you need and to get results! Good luck!
All you should have to have for a 504 is a diagnosis as long as you have a actual diagnosis you can write a letter requesting a 504 plan and not be denied one there are sample letters online if you already have a iep. You can request accommodations in it and shouldn't need both
