Stating the process for getting my son a 504 plan before he starts high school next year. Anyone have any advice or guidance in this process?? Really worried my son will get labeled the “problem” kid. He is a very popular kid with a lot of friends and I am also concerned if his friends find out about it they will treat him differently. I know that is the least of my worries but without his friends my son would lock himself in his room all day. Thanks for anything you can tell me!!!

My son is a freshman in high school this year. He is also extremely popular and has lots of friends. However, he struggles terribly in school with both grades and behavior. We initiated the process to get a 504 for my son recently. We have a meeting with his guidance counselor and teachers at the end of November. It is all new to me. I have been doing a lot of reading on 504 plans. My son is like yours about being treated differently. When I mentioned it to him the other day to try to prepare him slowly, he said, "you mean when other kids are done with the test, I am going to be allowed to have extra time, and everyone is going to ask me why I got that?". It is so hard. The last thing my son wants is to feel different (even though I know he does) or be treated differently. However, I know it is what he needs. I will keep you posted as we move through the process. Good luck on your journey.
