Hi - my son is 15 and takes Quillivant. He takes an extremely low dose (5ml of the liquid form) in the morning. We are still working on getting the correct dose for him. He was on a generic - 20mg for a while, but he had bad stomach issues and started hiding pills and not taking it. I had to switch to a liquid and lower the dose just to try to get him to take any medicine again. I know his dose is significantly lower than what he needs, but we are trying to bump it up over time so he doesn't fight taking it. You have a young child, so I doubt you will have the same battles I am having. I have talked to others whose children are taking Quillivant and have not had issues.
My son has been on at least 10 medications and I've never heard of that one. I've done a ton of research too. Go online and look it up and make sure it is appropriate for children. If it's not typically for ADHD you need to ask why it was prescribed instead of starting with a more typical ADHD medication. If you google, ADHD medications you can come up with a list of side effects. I wouldn't recommend starting her on something unless you know what it is!!
A very good friend used that with her son and had excellent results. My son uses a methylphenidate capsule I open up and mix with applesauce. However her son can not tolerate that so she needed a liquid. He was 5 when he started on it. She found it increased focus & attention and was very well tolerated. It’s scary giving your child medication but you’d give him Tylenol for a fever, and really this is no different. And the difference is almost immediately noticeable. Hang in there and be kind to yourself! Successfully helping your child manage ADHD is a process, not an event.
Unfortunately medication works differently for everyone, so just because someone has a good experience doesn't mean you're daughter will. The only way to know is to try it. I know it sucks because you want to do all your research and know what to expect, but nobody can tell you how a medication will affect your daughter except her. Good luck.
Quillivant has a good track record for treating ADHD. It is just methylphenidate (Ritalin) in a time release liquid form that should last through the school day when you get to the appropriate dose for your child. Make sure to give it with or after breakfast to avoid any complaints of headache or upset stomach. At certain doses, it can be changed into a chewable tablet (Quillichew), which can avoid worries about measuring or spilling (it is easy to pick up spilled tablets but not spilled liquid). If it works for your child and you have private insurance, make sure you use the coupon from the company that will limit the amount of copay.
Today is our 1st day trying meds.. I gave her 2ml instead of 5ml I think I'm waiting for something to happen. She is coloring and asking to do her work books but we do that every weekend. I'm waiting to see if she taps out on me .. she normally starts and quit a few minutes later!!! Thanks for your comments I appreciate it so much as I start this new journey in our lives!!! 😄
