Getting my son diagnosed

How do I go about getting my 12 year old son diagnosed? The Dr he was going to see neuropsychologist was out of network on my insurance & it was going to cost us $1,100.00. Right now we just can not afford that. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ❤️

My son was diagnosed by the public school districts psychologist when his IEP was started. Talk to the school and your child’s primary doctor to find a psychologist in network.

You may want to consult your pediatrician first, who will give you their professional opinion, and recommendations for psychologists, if needed.

Once you meet with a psychologist, there will be forms and/or interviews/conversations with the child, parents, and teachers for the evaluation to be most accurate. My husband and I each had to complete the questionnaire. It's difficult to be honest about the issues and challenges.

Once the psychologist had met with everyone, she/he will draw a complete report and meet with the parents to discuss. The benefit of completing this privately is you can choose whether you want to share it with the school.

The one thing I would stress is to be honest with the doctors. Do research, take notes, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Thank you ❤️ I have taken him to our family doctor. The school did some screening on him & suggested we take him. However, we can’t afford $1,100.00 out of plan right now. The Dr that is in plan doesn’t test or screen children for ADHD.

If you live in the US, the school must do a complete assessment if you request in writing and at no cost to you. And in some circumstances, would be obligated to pay the cost of a private assessment. Schools do not officially diagnose but the test results shared and the multi-disciplinary report will state the findings. An official diagnosis by a private party is not necessary to get services your child is deemed eligible to receive.
