How long post-op did you start to feel any better?

My brother had his AN operation (9 hours) on Thursday, which we believe went okay (but the surgeon rang the wrong number after the op, so all we've had is a brief message with very little info. and the nurses don't seem to know much detail).

He wasn't expecting to feel instantly better, but he's very down at the moment because his balance is currently worse than pre-op; his face and mouth still feel as numb as before and he's developed double vision, which the doctors have reassured him should resolve itself, but it's understandably worrying.

Can anyone share their own experiences on how long it took to start noticing any improvement, so I can try and reassure him that it will happen? Many thanks.

I felt exactly the same after my surgery (9 hours too) my balance improved after day 4 and was able to walk around the ward on day 6. My face is still temporarily paralysed 6 months on. But other than that I feel 50 times better than I did before my surgery. It’s a long road to recovery, I have my up and down days now still. It will affect him more than he realises. Best wishes on his recovery x
