Hi

My husband has AN which has doubled in size, he is waiting for appointment for Gamma Knife. His symptoms haven't been too bad up until now, he has now got balance issues and tiredness... Is there anything he can get from doctors that would help until he gets the procedure?

I am not a Doctor BUT many others have had steroids prescribed by their Doctors in these circumstances with excellent results. Also, can you put "doubled in size" into context? Doubling from 5mm to 10mm is usually much less serious than doubling from 15mm to 30mm! I think an urgent appointment is called for.

GFmum:

From my experiences with Gamma knife; the gamma knife procedure is quick. I entered the hospital at 8:00 am, had a titanium frame attached to my head, had an MRI to locate the AN, and once in the gamma knife it took 18 minutes to radiate 15mm of AN. I was out by noon and fixed a flat on my wife's van that afternoon.

The balance issues will not get better unless you do something about it. The fatigue is probably coming from your somatosensory system overworking, trying to figure out what's going on with your balance since the cerebellum is getting false information from the semi-circular canals in the affected ear. That fatigue may accompany pain from an overheated cerebellum (you can feel the heat on the back of your head with your hand).

I have a high tolerance for drugs, so I used a more natural way to get rid of the somatosensory problem: somatosensory exercises. It took weeks doing these exercises to "reset" my cerebellum, which got rid of the head pain and general confusion of thinking (momentary memory loss from the brain "static".

I am telling you may story to help you understand what is probably ahead of you so that there are few surprises. There will be balance problems, hearing loss, probably tinnitus and possibly memory problems. Brain physical therapy helps to resolve the balance and brain pain problem, drugs just momentarily hide them, although they are helpful until you decide to do something to permanently resolve your problems.

Refer to the following link for the "Brain Resetting Exercises":

Good luck with an urgent gamma knife procedure; I wish you well.
