Hi, I wonder if anybody can give me a bit of advice please .... I have lost significant amount of hearing and consultant sent me for MRI as he was worried, that there might be something sinister going on ( his words not mine) but how long would I have to wait for results? As a bit worried. Thank you
Advice please : Hi, I wonder if anybody... - Acoustic Neuroma ...
Advice please
In my own case (similar symptoms to your own) it was just under a week from having the first MRI to getting an unexpected call to visit the consultant to hear the diagnosis. After subsequent scans, with no change in my tumour, it was around a month between scan and consultation. I have no idea, though, if those are typical times in the NHS.
I had a call from my consultant within 48 hours of my MRI - but it was a private appointment. I would make friends with your consultants secretary and find out all you can from her!
About 10 days after my first MRI, I received a letter asking me to return for a second MRI with contrast. I received my diagnosis from the consultant about 2-3 weeks later. Because ANs are usually very slow to grow and treatment is not usually needed immediately, doctors often don't feel any urgency about appointments, but forget how worried a patient may be about the results of a scan.
Once diagnosed, I was referred to a specialist at another hospital. At the time, I was thinking I would be seen within two weeks, as cancer patients normally are, but I waited ten weeks. Looking back, I still feel that those weeks were the most stressful of my whole experience.
In those rare cases where an AN is large enough to need urgent treatment, I am sure a patient would be contacted quickly, and receive priority.
Thank you so much for the advice , mine is not private unfortunately but spoke to the consultants secretary yesterday ,she said it can take up to 2 weeks!!! So think I will have to wait it out ...but I really don't like waiting as it is such a worry .... saying that you have put my mind at rest a bit, as if it was large or anything to worry about ...I would have heard already 😃 hope your getting the help and care you all deserve.
Hi. I can only speak from my own, recent, experience. I waited around 3 months from ENT appointment for the MRI scan. The ENT Doctor then phoned me the following week to tell me I had an AN. That may not be the normal way of informing patients of results, I think he was being helpful because I live 2hours drive from the hospital at Wrexham. I was then referred to Liverpool (over 2hours away) to a skull base surgeons AN clinic. The appointment for this came through quite quickly and I am now waiting for a further MRI scan in September to see if my AN is growing (it is quite small 7mm at present so no rush) . I hope your appointments come through quickly a, I think, the waiting is the worst part. You may be lucky and not have anything 'sinister' after all. Good luck.

Hi could you please tell me what day of the week you skull base surgeons clinic was on in Liverpool. Sorry about strange question but I have appointment at same clinic for MRI results but it doesn't say AN on my letter so just wondered if the clinic is on the same day of the week. My appointment is on a Wednesday.
I had an MRI scan within 1 week of seeing someone about hearing loss and got my results within two weeks was referred to another hospital straight away and had an appointment with them fairly quickly. If they suspect something they usually get you in pretty quickly Good luck hope it all goes well for you
Once you've had the MRI, your Dr. should have the results within one week.
