Morning- I am really wanting to lose weight, but find it hard to fit in exercise with working full time, cooking and generally looking after my family. I can’t afford a gym. How do you guys fit in your exercise please?

Hi Bluebell and welcome :)

Firstly, don't fret the exercise as you can lose weight with or without it. Additionally, it sounds like you're getting a fair bit of exercise just by looking after your family.

Have a look at modifying how much you eat and what you're eating (and drinking) and this will be the main factor that will help you on your journey.

An administrator will reply shortly with a number of links to very, very helpful information. It will be worth taking the time out to read it all and understand what is really going on and ways of moving forward.

Best of luck, you can do it! :) :)

Hi and welcome, Bluebell01 :)

I walk my dog at 4am, for an hour, again at midday and again at approximately 10pm. In between, I have an exercise bike that I use, a kettlebell, some wrist weights, I do squats, lunges, counter/wall presses, star jumps, planks, burpees, hoola hooping, skipping, in any spare moment through the day, eg waiting for the kettle to boil, while I'm on the phone, etc. I've never used a gym and have no plans to :)

Follow this link to our chat thread and a list of all the activities we run. We've found active participation to be key to success, especially with our weigh-ins and Daily Diary.

Hi and welcome, Bluebell01 - the good news is that your eating will contribute much much more to your weight loss than exercise - although exercise is still good for your general health and fitness.

I also work full-time, and try to work exercise into my daily routine.

I cycle to work and for local socialising (short distance and easy roads, I realise not everyone can do it). When the kids were small I had a trailer for them.

I walk at lunchtime - I'm meeting a friend today, we have half an hour's walk and blether, then half an hour's soup in a café and more blether. Used to be an hour in the café until we realised we could catch up with each other and get some exercise at the same time!

I do quite a lot of gardening - weeding is good for bending and stretching, watering can is good for "weights"!

I do sometimes hula-hoop (made a great playlist!) but the kids find it rather too amusing for my liking.

I also find housework quite energetic! But maybe that's just me. Especially hoovering, washing windows, and hauling in wood for the stove in winter. (Also collecting and sawing/chopping same, ready for next season.)

When the kids were younger, family holidays and outings were usually chosen to be quite active. We did a week's instructor-led watersports for several years in a row (in Scotland which is where I live) - windsurfing and canoeing were pretty energetic.

Can you carve out an hour a week for an exercise class? Or half an hour a day for a swim? Can anyone else look after the children in the evening so you can do this?

Good luck!

I actually feel it's much easier to lose weight by controlling your diet. Of course doing both is ideal. To lose say 500 calories at the gym would take an hour whereas, if you simply don't eat a couple of treats you can slash those calories without doing anything (I'm not sure how disciplined your diet already is). There's an NHS app you can use to calculate your calories and some helpful tips on what proportions of foods to eat as well as useful recipes.

I think exercise is a great bonus, but I don't think it's essential to losing weight.

I'm enjoying a slow but steady weight loss on the Low Carb-Healthy Fat way of eating without taking any (I'm disabled). That said, I'm looking forward to being more mobile and able to walk further simply by weighing less - it's a virtuous circle.

Good luck!
