Went out locally for a Sunday roast, it was plated (thank goodness),when my lamb roast arrived I though, huh...so...small....not happy!!!. But a revelation happened really, it was enough, I didn't get that oh I am so full feeling after, which let's be honest isn't very nice. I have thought about this quite a bit this week as we all know our portion sizes are generally too big. I have watched programs and read up on portion size and you know it does make sense, just wish it was always easy......

the hard lesson of knowing when you will be full and not to keep eating or loading on more than we need( but would like). Having a bit of enforced inactivity recently I have come two conclusions- water really is our friend- keeping super hydrated - keeps the appetite at bay and I have felt well. Secondly for people with a poor appetite-it is much easier to consume less calories- I have experienced this this week. You eat slower, can't eat the volume and stop when you are full. I am going to adopt the following:-
Drink water more often - not gallons at once - but sip through the day.
Eat more slowly- it does make a difference as to when we clock when full
Plate my food - one half low starch veg /salad , bit of starch and small piece of protein.
Good luck
I found portions hard to do as well. I have found that I have to weigh my food out. I was also amazed at how much a portion really is! And I would never have been able to guess without putting my plate on the scales and checking exactly how much food I am actually getting.
I always intend to drink enough water, but find it's a lot harder to actually do. Especially when I'm at work. I get into something and then forget...
I've been losing weight for years reasonably successfully, if slowly. My recent portion shock was weighing my fruit. You get much less berries as a portion than I would have thought. I have always had a tendency to just eat as much fruit as I wanted and it was my safe snack too. It has been an eye opener cutting down to half a portion at a time. Sometimes it is just 3 strawberries. I would have eaten at least a third or half of a punnet, previously. It's speeded up my weight loss too. Which is hard to do so near to goal. Sorting out portions really does support weight loss. It's great for eating out too. I can now judge most weights with just a glance at the plate.
Agree totally ๐ Portion control really is key. Especially calorie dense foods like meat/starches. But as we get smaller j find my appetite really is decreasing ๐ Yay!!
My other surprise was how little Mayo you get for the calories ๐ณ Going onto 'normal' when this jar runs out, it goes a lot further!
Onwards and downwards
Hi Miamia,
Yes, portion sizes are key in so many ways. Glad you felt satisfied with the Lamb roast - and it sounds like you're getting used to considering your portion sizes.
I am re-booting back at Week 1 currently, and portion sizes are one of the focuses of that week - and I am already cutting back on some of my serving sizes - e.g. the amount of butter I eat - it had gradually been sliding upwards, so I'm cutting it back - and the taste is still as nice with a smear of butter as it was with a slather...!
Have a lovely weekend.
Lowcal
Initially I was cooking myself separate meals to my family and looking at them longingly wishing for some. Then I decided to work out the calories and have some myself, remembering to go easy on the carbs and fill up on veg and salad. This week I had small portions of fish pie, lamb casserole and a Cajun chicken recipe and I've felt full and satisfied. I actually did the same last week too and lost, so I'm hoping I've cracked it and proving that you can eat what you like, but it's all about the quantity. For the first time I've actually enjoyed eating whilst being on a diet and I've got this forum to thank for that and the advice about calorie counting and portion sizes ๐๐
Using a smaller plate really does work. Looking at a small portion on a large plate makes me think I'll still be hungry when I finish before I've taken the first bite, but seeing the same amount piled high on a smaller plate looks like a banquet!
