Hi, on the NHS website go on BMI calculater it will ask your details height, weight etc and it will tell you how much weight to lose and how many calories you need each day, you could always write your calories down to keep track or like me I down loaded my fitness pal app on my phone, to keep accurate track of cals I weigh my foods so I know what I'm consuming, hope this helps :-)

The free MyFitnessPal app and website is absolutely brilliant. It will work out how many calories you need to lose weight and then you enter in everything you eat and it keeps a running total.

Definitely recommend the NHS website advice. I used print offs of the weekly record sheets. If you don't want to go down the myfitnesspal route I use a wee book called pocket calorie counter. It has sensible portion sizes and gives the calories of most foods.

Good luck

Hi natnatmumof3,

Yes - I'd agree with those, but - assuming you to be overweight - I'd also advise you take one long slow look at just what you are really eating. How often, how much, what sorts of food.

To be blunt, if you are overweight, excepting certain medical conditions, it's usually because you're eating more food than you need and usually that means you're eating higher-fat and higher-calorie food, resulting in your body storing increasing amounts of body fat.

That is how your body adapts to being fed too much fat and too many calories - it stores fat.

The process of weight loss is to reverse that and get your body to adapt back, by changing your eating habits.

I'd suggest you keep a food diary - but you do need to record E V E R Y T H I N G. The lattes, the starters, the toppings, the gravies, the custards, the deserts, the little nibbles, the (alcoholic) drinks, etc., etc.

And you need to count what you eat at home, what you eat at work, and on the way to and from, and when out socialising. ALL of it. You need to be ruthlessly honest about it.

But knowledge is a powerful thing and once you get a handle on what is really happening for you at the moment then you will find that to be a useful lever to bring about change for you.

Hi doikosp, yeah I completely agree with what your saying and it wasn't until I kept a food diary before I got fitness pal that actually did take note of how bad my diet was! And with changes I made to. my diet and even learning what foods i could have still I think writing it all down really is the way, since I started a food/drink diary I also learned to cut back alot of caffeine and soda and now drink lots of water, I previously lost just under 8 stone doing this of course with doing exercise too even the exercise part I used to think nooooo not for me but it was just about finding something I could enjoy personally, I like walking and so as well as doing it outdoors I got a treadmill and I love Zumba and got inspired by the biggest loser so bought there Wii games and DVDs that I do.

don't do it alone. best to join a group like Weight Watchers. you can do it online or go to a meeting and the first month is about £10 so hopefully affordable to you
