Do the BMI calculation on the page in this link and follow the other advice as well. It should help.

Hi, ive just started to tackle my excess weight, I have slowly gained 1.5 stone over past 10yrs and want to get back in shape. Ive read advice from several source and it seems around 1200 calories should see safe steady loss of 1-2 lbs per week. I am 61 and not a gym bunny by any means ..ha...but I am trying to walk rather than drive now that the weather's better. Good luck to you too.

Hi, thanks Elliebath, I done the nhs link for BMI and it said between 1700-2000 which I thought was a lot for a diet, probably use 1200cals by dinner time, ha. Ive got my note pad ready today to add up,Im OK if I dont snack, good luck yourself let me know how you get on.

I think the 1700 may refers to total calories that your body needs before you exercise any calories away. There is a site called My fitness which calculates this in more detail. I started to use it yesterday and you put in all your food and drink each day, plus any excercise, and it monitors your daily intake, nfat grams, sugar etc. Thats where I got the 1200 target from!
