Hi im experiencing severe jaw pain since being on alendronic acid . I know this can be a rare side effect . Any advice ?

I don't have any experience of this but maybe you should see your doctor or your dentist might know as it can affect the jaw. There might be an alternative.

I would get it checked out if it is severe just to be on the safe side.

Like Lynne, I don't have experience of this. I've taken alendronic acid and not had those problems. I agree with Lynne, this needs to be discussed with your consultant.

Maybe John Mills (retired dentist) might have some helpful info for you.

Unfortunately it is a side effect of biphosphonates that they can cause avascular bone necrosis. This is usually only the result of long term use and only becomes a serious issue when it comes to having a tooth extracted. (In that case it is usually a matter of having antibiotic cover and delayed healing.trying to It is important to get the teeth in that area checked very thoroughly as that is the most likely cause of the pain. If that source of pain has been thoroughly explored, you need to be referred to an oral surgeon for a fuller examination. If you live within travelling distance of a teaching hospital with a dental department, that would be the best option.

hi tidgy pud

My jaws really ache when i'm eating. especially if it something especially "chewy".....so i tend to avoid those foods now .......even some of my favourites! Its only been like this a few months a never even thought it could be the AA. I may mention this when i go and see my consultant next week.
